My first seven-ish days with my moonie

This is just my observation but feel free to comment

Surly must think grease is gold because they don't want to give any away

BB out and one side okayish the other almost bone dry so lubed up. Then every bolt, pedal, seat post and metal meeting metal part out and a decent amount of copperslip on each thread

Sizing..at 6ft 3 and 250lbs with a 32 inside leg I was worried the 20 was going to be too small but it's just about right even more so as most of it's life will be off road

tires pressures, not something I've had to worry about as much before..I found gravel riding about 11 rear and 9 front and on the white stuff 8 rear and 7 front

wheels..if I had paid for the powder coat separately I would have taken them back and said do them properly..incredibly thin coat and easy to scratch back to metal

No problem with the hubs so far but quality cone spanners were bought just in case

I am going to learn how to adjust the wheels on these. although I have the basics on normal bikes the sizes of these tyres can mean they go out of balance so would be handy if I can do my own..a bike shop would do this cheap and quick I just fancy learning myself for the rare occasion it might need doing

no matter what the nice man at the rim tape site says..10mm reflective tape does not fit..don't go above 7mm but 5 or 6 would be ideal

that's about if for now, been out everyday and for the largely humble folk of sturgis s/d think demons have come to town riding a wide black sparkly chariot..huzzah

I think they actually black anodize the rims.

I wore my Whirly BB bearings out after a few months. All I did was some touring, race cyclocross on it, and ride it through a lake. But seriously, I don't think the bearings are sealed. I've since replaced with Chris King and stopped thinking about it.

    Things you should probably know:

The valve stems are notoriously bad at low pressures. If you come out to a flat in the morning, pump it up and try again before fishing for a puncture.

The "bash guard" doesn't stand up to being run into concrete at speed.

In heavy snow, a 34 tooth sprocket in the back might not be enough.

When people see you on it, they'll want you to talk about it. At least they do here in Portland.

Enjoy it. You have ridden it, right?
