Well, at least you didn't have to sleep inside the belly of a Tauntaun.

    Great pics!

Stunning pics and big respect only had to contend with 33-35*C with 80% humidity and beach sand today. Not sure that snow business is for me.

Man I would kill for a snow ride right now. Haven't been on the snow since FBW's in Jan. There has been no snow in Denver area for 6 weeks. Awesome pics!

More. And this isn't even half of the good pics we took. Even though it looks like this place never sees summer, the signs are summer are already creeping into Alaska. We are getting melting in the latter half of the day when the temps are in the 20s. As the days start to stretch, the ground starts to absorb more and more radiation. Soon, the temperature will feel significantly warmer than the air temp indicates, due to everything absorbing sun radiation for more than 12hrs a day. Snow melts extremely fast then, faster than places in the mountains down south. It was nice to get out here though to a place where it looks like it's winter, almost like an ice-planet. You'd be amazed where you can find liquid water though, even when it's well in the -F temps.

Knik Glacier, which is accessed from near Butte, AK, about 30 min east of Anchorage. Right now we are getting articles about how people have to pay $100 for a guided tour of Matanuska Glacier, which can be accessed from a road, but the road is on private propterty and supposedly they own all the land up to the glacier. But here, you can ride up for free, because it's all public lands, like most glaciers in Alaska. This isn't a huge tourist trap like some other spots and we had it pretty much to ourselves the entire day, which was neat. We did a ride out here a few weeks back, accessing it from the other side of the river, which was much longer, 20 miles each way. We had to break trail that day too, so that was an 8hr round trip with barely any time near the glacier and the end of the ride in darkness. On the side we accessed this time, it was only 10 miles each way and conditions were fantastic, mostly hard wind-packed or wind-scraped.
