If he knew he was alone with no one coming behind him or if he thought he had that safety net? Ballsy move either way, and he pulled it off. Hat's off to him. Hopefully the checkpoint crew is still there, or at least left some drop bag discards in the cabin, if not the contents of his.

Craig should have no problem making it to McGrath before the 10 day cut off. If he covers the remaining miles in 3 segments(Rohn to Bear Creek cabin tomorrow- 40 miles, BC cabin to Nikolai the next day- 30 miles, and Nikolai to McGrath the day after- 50 miles), he'll make it in 9 days and change.

Craig bypassed the Bear Creek cabin last night and kept riding till about 3AM it looks like. It's possible he'll make it to Nikolai around noon. Will be interesting to see how long he rests. He could potentially finish under 9 day right now.

Danny Powers, Kim Riggs and Tab Balentine are on the Nikolai to McGrath stretch right now. Assuming they take the same route, I would expect Kim and Tab on bike to catch Danny on skis at the temps that area has been seeing, which are likely slowing him to more of a shuffle than a glide.

Kevin Breitenbach was cruising out front in the Nome race till he got to Cripple. Looks like he's been pushing his bike in really soft snow ever since, making around 1 mile per hour. Jay Cable is slowly closing in on him, which is normal when the person out front hits an extended section really soft trail. Tim Hewitt is behind Jay and RJ Sauer left McGrath with Matrijn Boonman a little over a day behind Jay and Tim.

The race is up to 34 scratches out of I believe 68 that were signed up to go at least as far as McGrath. Sounds like a lot, and it is the highest individual amount, but that's partly because more people started this year. There were similar scratch rates(@50%) in 2003, 2006 and 2007. 2007 being the only other year the race went through Hell's Gate. 2012 saw the highest scratch rate, 29 out of 47 starters.

Not a chance in hell we would have abandoned the checkpoint before Craig arrived.

Awesome to hear, OE! I think Rob waited an extra day for myself, Roger and George in 2009.

You guys certainly had your work cut out for you this year.

Craig has left Nikolai after about 4 hours of rest. It took Tab and Kim about 10 hours to make it to McGrath. Will he ride straight through or bivy?

Tim Hewitt is in Poorman now, the pace is slow and the temps cold. It takes some real fortitude to willingly decide to return to the location of a near death experience and face those demons again.

Hurray for Craig Bullen finishing the 350 today!

@AlaskaOE....would really like some stories from the outposts.

I'm not up on what's happening with the race, but the ice looks good so far.

former Ice Desk appears to be http://www.weather.gov/afc/ice NWS Alaska Sea Ice Program (ASIP)
Iditarod Trail Invitiational Race/Ride: Start to Flathorn Lake (pics)-ice-pack-march-9-2017.gif

Haven't found the new home of the detail sat photos (link I saved won't open), but with https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov that may not be needed.
And clicking on the arrow to move from day to day, you can see the pack ice flow. This animation doesn't animate for some reason. The upper one does.

Kevin is holed up in Galena with a stomach bug. Jay got there last night and hopefully doesn't pick it up from Kevin. Tim and RJ are on their way there now. By all accounts so far, the trail on the Yukon is hard and fast now, with the IditarunawaytoFairbanks dog sled race coming through.

Heather posted some photos from her and Jeff riding the sea ice and it looked pretty good.

    According to trackleaders GPS:
    • Jay Cable is around 3/4 across the ice to Koyuk. He arrived in Shaktoolik last night in the dark. There was a waypoint at 23 minutes after showing his location south of town; the av cam at 24 mins showed a light at that location so probably his headlight on approach. A waypoint has him passing the camera pole around 33 mins and the next snapshot it took was at 36 mins, so he was long gone into town.
    • RJ Sauer is largely across the flats and nearly at Shaktoolik.
    • Tim Hewitt is over ten miles out of Unalkleet. Ahead of him is the climb then descent to the flats to Shaktoolik.
    • Martijn Boonman is showing in the valley just descending to and a short distance from Tripod Flats (then on to the coast).
    • Petr Ineman is shown at Kaltag two hours ago and at rest for the past hour and a half.
    • Troy Sczurkowski is shown on the river over halfway from Galena to Koyukuk.

From early March where the ice pack had closed with the Fast Ice, it appears to have opened up again. Motion of the ice pack shows it's closing up again to the east end but widening in the stretch from Topcock to Safety to Nome Point. So like most years, the danger is someone getting off the path there and onto the ice and reaching thin ice or water. At the closest, looks like the gap starts around 1200 yards off shore.

    wow
seems I turn my back and...

    Trackleaders is showing:
    • Jay Cable is about to arrive at White Mountain.
    • RJ Sauer has less than 3 miles to Elim.
    • Tim Hewit has left Koyuk with ~36 miles to Elim.
    • Martijn Boonman shows as stationary at Shaktoolik.
    • Petr Ineman is in Unalkleet.
    • Troy Sczurkowski is in or around Old Woman Cabin, Unalkleet up next.

And in the time it took to check trackleaders.com and write this, Jay has arrived in White Mountain.

    From the Ice Desk:
On today's satellite image (and yesterday's as you've attached to your email), there is a narrow area along the north coast of Norton Sound that shows a polynya forming where the more mobile ice is pulling away from the shorefast ice. This is not uncommon along coastal areas of Alaska where sea ice forms.
It does look like there might be a small area of open water where the sea ice recently pulled away from the shorefast ice. These areas of open water quickly fill in with thin ice that will steadily thicken over time. The thicker ice may also move back northward and close that area off again with the thicker ice if/when winds become southerly again.

The timestamp on the top of the image is several minutes fast when it updates on my computer. I have no way of telling when the image was actually taken, but if like past years, it is updating live.

My internet has been in and out all day, so I can't count on being able to make a copy as people arrive in.

That's a great image -- encompassing Koyuk in the extreme upper right to Nome all the way at left. FWIW, once you leave Golovnin Bay you're never on sea ice again. Little bit of travel on the river after White Mountain, and you cross a few rivers in the Topkok Hills, but the rest is on land.

And interesting how the Ice Desk calls the ice going to Koyuk Shore-fast ice, not sea ice.
It was scary last year how close open water was to where the track was. Where the track is farthest out from Elim this year, was water last year...
The risk is people getting off track due to white-out or fatigue, and ending up on fresh thin ice or in water. Water was just too close from Topcock through Nome Point last year.

    Trackleaders shows:
    • Martijn Boonman was just in and out of Golovin, already heading out for White Mountain.
Golovin is overcast, 1F/-17C and 4 knots from the NNW, pretty much Martijn's heading across the ice.
White Mountain is overcast, 11F/-12C and 0 knots.
    • GPS logging has Petr Ineman ahead of Troy Sczurkowski by my estimate < 2 miles, but that's questionable due to the log points not coming in at the same time. They're both off the shore-fast ice from Elim and past Walla Walla, heading for McKinley Creek.
Elim (well behind them) is also overcast, 6F/-14C, 0 knots.

    Trackleaders shows:
    • Martijn Boonman has left Safety, heading for Nome!
    • Petr Ineman and Troy Sczurkowski are at Topcock.
    • Nome airport webcams are showing sunny. Last MET -3F/-19C and 0 knots.

And the Nome webcam is no longer pointing at the finish. If anyone up there knows who aims that, perhaps you could give them a call?
Showing the finish instead of a street surely has more tourist value?

    Trackleaders shows:
    • Martijn Boonman is around Nome Point!
    • Petr Ineman and Troy Sczurkowski are roughly a quarter of the way from Topcock to Safety. GPS points are so close together, can't tell if one is ahead or if they're piggybacking.

Martijn Boonman at the finish line in Nome!

Looks like the cam just caught him coming in (gotta be him?). Good thing as I haven't been able to spot him in the pack since.

Troy Sczurkowski and Petr Ineman are in a Nome!

This is the first image I have with a bike.

First image with two bikes. (I'm hoping not a bystander in the back... If so, I've got the snapshots for the next 11 minutes where we see two bike standing for photos.)
