Converting pugs complete stock triple to double. What r the options

I have the pugs complete with the truvativ triple crankset. I already have the large chainring locked out via limit screws. I dont need it. In fact, i would like to move out inner two chainrings so the small chainring is further away from the seat tube.

I also like the idea of a bashguard. .

What are my options? Can i modify the existing crankset to achieve what i have described? Thx!

Ditch the granny - 1x9 is all you need. Mount a 32t in the middle position with a BBG bashguard ($18) and mount a JumpStop on the seat tube. Or mount a Paul Keeper without a bash. Or keep the big ring for a bash and use the locked out FD for chain retention only.

I use my granny a loooooot. This might be why mikesee started that "where ya from?" thread

Since you've already adjusted it so you can't shift into the big ring, you can throw a bash guard on- pick your poison, I personally like the e.13 Turbocharger.

But that doesn't answer your question about moving your granny and mid rings out further. The only way I know how to do that is the Surly MWOD crank set like the Necro pugs and Moonlander has. By doing this, you can squeeze a fatter setup on your Pugs. Well, but then you'd be looking at getting a Moonlander fork too... slippery slope

Why do you want to move the rings out? Tire rub when using the small ring and big sprocket? How often do you use the smallest sprockets on the cassette? You can ditch the smaller sprockets and run 5-7 of the sprockets on the cassette spaced outwards so that you can avoid the tire rub. I didn't get tire rub but my bike is set up this way to have a better chain line in all ratios. I found that I don't really need the smaller sprockets where I ride. You're needs might be different, but that is an easier fix than messing with new cranks.

Not due to tire rub. The fd rubs against my frame bag when on the smallest ring. Ths is esp true when the bag is filled with items and the fabric puffs out. I thought, by removing the largest ring, i can rearrange the smaller two rings outward?

Yeah you're a good MWOD candidate in that case. If someone else offers an offset double crank, it will be news to me, so maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Phil Wood 150 or 155 spindle bottom bracket with an appropriate double could give plenty of offset and a lot of versatility.

Ahh so unless a specialty crank like the MWOD, none of the normal cranks allow the interchangeable mounting of rings due to different physical dimension and position of the crank bolt holes?

damn MWOD cranket is north of $300.. i Don't think I want to do that conversion that badly...

Seems like altering your bag would be cheaper and easier than completely rebuilding your drivetrain...

Can you sew? Do you know of any tailor shops in your town? You'd be surprised what they can do.

That's my setup. I got a gently used Phil and sourced a set of square taper cranks on eBay . Total cost was about $135 with about a 2 lb weight loss. That Hussefelt setup weighs a ton.

    How can we help clarify?

The pattern of holes (BCD) on the middle and big rings are the same, but the inner small ring is a smaller pattern so unfortunately it can't be moved outward without a different bottom bracket that is wider, or a crankset like the MWOD which is made to move the rings outward.

The options are to take all of the front gears off and switch them with a wider different bottom bracket such as the phil wood mentioned above and using compatible crank arms, buy a surly MWOD, alter your bag so that the derailer doesn't rub or just leave it be and let the derailer hit the bag.

vaultb: thanks for the clarification.. I'm a newb when it comes to bike mechanicals.. just started tinkering on bikes with my pugsley.

The PW BB being 150mm or 155mm, I assume that is a longer than normal spindle? (I have not idea the spindle length on the Truvativ Howitzer BB) That length is what makes it possible for the cranks to extend out further right?

Yup. And to complicate matters is the fact that not every crankset of a given spindle compatibility has the same dimensions such as width when mounted at either the chainrings(which determines chainline) or the pedal interface(which is called Q factor or tread)

Keep reading and looking and tinkering and it will all start to make sense.

I just ditched the big ring, locked out that position on the shifter and threw an MRP Party Crasher on there. Easy peasy.

Ok so to install the MRP Party Crasher I don't install it as a cover of the big ring. I remove the big ring and replace it with the MRP?

That is pretty much what I did.
