I was about to make the exact same question about the dropouts. The Ogre/Troll dropouts are a success, and seem to fit a fatbike's purpose much better than the current ones
We decided that since this was the first place to speculate about one of our new bikes we’d do a bit of a release right here and now in this thread. This is official and this is the first place we, Surly, are talking about this publicly.
Our new bike is called Krampus.
It’s the first bike for a platform we’ve created called 29+ (important little detail there).
It’s a 29er. Brilliant, you get a gold star.
It’s got clearance for up to a 3” tire.
It get’s this done with a 73mm BB.
I’m guessing that you’d like to know more and I bet you’d like to see some pictures. All in good time my friend.
You’ve entertained us rather well and we’ve paid attention. We read the forums and the blogs wherever we’re mentioned. Now let’s see if you’re paying attention.
Krampus is a mythical creature recognized in Alpine countries. According to legend, Krampus accompanies Saint Nicholas during the Christmas season, warning and punishing bad children, in contrast to St. Nicholas, who gives gifts to good children. When the Krampus finds a particularly naughty child, it stuffs the child in its sack and carries the frightened child away to its lair, presumably to devour for its Christmas dinner.

3" tires is too skinny for a fat bike. I guess we need a new category - how about a Chubby or Chubbike?....
I bet it all comes out tomorrow at the Saddledrive expo...oh boy! hope it has normal hub spacing....for running standard 29er wheels as well as whatever 29+ is...

Keep an eye on the difference in BB height's between the Chuby wheels + rubber and normal 29er wheels + rubber. If it's too much the BB will be way low on normal 29ers and not terribly useful.
"A mythical beast is being ridden" . Sounds like a new bike.
Mythical beasts: Bigfoot, chupacabra, sasquatch, yeti (taken), minotaur, Jersey Devil, unicorn...
Groovy! 3" for 29 "plus"... increased contact patch, floatation, "rollability" by adjusting things longidude wise rather than latitude wise. I get it! Can't wait to ride one! Could be real cool for bike packing, especially for those carrying a little heavier/bulkier load. Sounds like the Unimog of bikes to me. Unimogs touch the ground- and roll over it- in a much different manner than most other 4x4 trucks-and all while getting twice (or more) the gas milage of comparable trucks, having a bigger bed, and taking up less "real estate" (and have done so since the '50's). Sorry for drawing similaritys to a motor vehicle, I just see similar thinking in design. Unimogs(particularly the old military versions) use a high floatation tire/rim that appears more like a skinny, not so high floatation set-up. It's done by increasing the diamiter and keeping the rim as wide as (or a little wider) than the tread. I used to have a Mog and it's an amazing affect. My '62 Mog could cruise down the rockyest roads and you'd hardly feel a bump in the seat... totally stock w/ military tires. Trully amazing! If you've driven or ridden in a Mog, you know what I'm talking about. Got a feelin' that's sort of what we're headed for w/ this new "twist"... the "Krampus".... a "Mog-Bike"!
My Mog (can't see it but there's a Klein w/ Snow-Cats in the back)...
MauricioB,
its all true. Really it is. I've not SEEN it, but conversed with secretively high level Surly employs, and all those details were confirmed. I was even promised a ride on one. maybe. if he ever gets one.

And i am starting to have doubt about finishing the build of my KM....
I've had a KM sitting on my bench un-built for a couple years now due to these dang, constant new developements. I'ts going to have to keep waiting and now seems destined for a monster cross project.

With a 73mm BB and a 29er base on the Krampus, i might put my KM on hold for a while as well.
I already got all the parts and there is a set of P-35's coming my way as well.
So if all i need is a set of 29+ tires, my monkey will probably end up being a spare frame.
