Here is the first Mock up. Looks pretty promising.

Took the frame and wheels to a machinist friend over the weekend. He's making longer axles for the Phil Wood hubs so it will all bolt together.
While he's doing his thing, I'll be working on the front wheels.
More pics to come as work progresses.

Cool! What are you going to use for the front wheels?

Maybe hand truck wheels and tires or snowblower... or wheelbarrow?

Cool idea.... Last year at the annual Forth Fat gathering there was a collection and the proceeds when to the local Beach Wheelchair business:

    Home

Tell us / Show us about the hub / axle set up..... my friend is talking about fabricating a Surly Bill trailer replica (as the real things are eye bleedingly expensive) and the hubs are the talking point at the moment. Wheelchair hubs have been mentioned.

    Sturmey-Archer make a single sided hub - with a drum brake. Sturmey-Archer | X-SD

They also do a version with an internal dynamo.

He's going to need a couple of weeks on the axles. He's busy.
I scored two sets of Phil Wood wheelchair hubs on Ebay for 99 dollars a pair. I contacted Phil Wood about how to get them apart and asked about getting more if I needed them and they said they still make them for 277 a pair. I really scored.
As soon as I get my custom axles back I'll post pics.
That Sturmy Archer hub would have worked as well if I needed a brake.

So, I picked up the axles this past weekend. I also received a box of caster wheels I bought. I ended up not liking them so I ordered the poly Wheeleez wheels in 9" x 4". Should have them tomorrow.
While mocking up wheel position and ride height, I realized the front wheels are going to interfere with the foot rests. After looking at it for quite a while, I thought about mounting the big wheels further forward and running the caster wheels off the back. Seems to me it would roll better on sand like that. Only problem might be if you had to rock the chair up a curb or something in which case you'd want the wheels toward the back to pivot on.
    Anyone have any input?
