Budget Fat Bikes? Origin 8 Crawler -VS- Fat Sand Terrain Destroyer
How do these "more affordable" fat bikes match up?
Thanx in advance, Dave.

Origin 8 Crawler: Single speed set up (positive or negative depending on what you are looking for), it weighs as much as a whale (42lbs according to Origin 8), more thought/opinions Origin 8 Crawler fat bike
Fat Sands Terrain Destroyer: For the price, save up a little more and buy a surly or salsa

Thanx Rock,
I'm kinda partial to bikes with an IGH.
My current commuter has a Nexus 8, like the Fat Sand Destroyer.
I'd love to get a 9zero7 Tusken with the Nuvinci hub, but, can't afford the $3K.
So, that's why the Origin 8 Crawler caught my eye.

If it is bike vs no bike, I would go with cheaper and ride the shiz out of it. But you probably can find a decent bike for a decent price used or on clearance somewhere of you look around. I know my LBS has 9 zero 7s and Pugs on sale right now for a wink and a smile. But IGH, that will narrow your ability to find used.
I'd ride a regular cassette and invest in an IGH over time(which is actually my plan with my Necro)

+1 - I love my Alfine 8 Pugs.
If it was me I've hunt for any older Pugs with worn out drivetrain. That should equal a low price and since you don't want the drivetrain anyway it's no loss to you. Then buy an Alfine 8 and build up the Pugs as an IGH fatty.
If the used Pugs has an okay drivetrain you can ride as is for a while to soften the $$ blow.

Did I mention that asymetrical rims & spokes still make me nervous when I look at them?
But, back to the Crawler and Destroyer . . . . are they really that bad, that nobody would own one?
Thanx for all the advice!

That's the majority of what they're going to do - make you nervous.
I've seen more broken fat frames than fat asymmetrical wheels - zero on the latter. I prefer internal gear hubs also.
Find a wheel builder who's done this stuff many times before. I suggest Jim, he is the sh!t.

The Destroyer geometry (chainstays and wheelbase) doesn't look friendly to trail riding, especially anything tight or technical. So for me that makes it useless.

the crawler looks to have decent geometry and parts at least.
the chainstay is a little longer than I would like, but otherwise it looks perfect for trail riding. I would bet it handles quite well, other than being heavy, and an inch longer than it needs to be.
The terrain destroyer on the other hand is worthless for trail riding, with about 3-4 inches too long of a chainstay, and cheap crap parts. I wouldn't pay over $400 for a terrain destroyer. It doesn't have any real MTB parts, more like Walmart parts.

Since this is a budget fat bike thread, might as well throw the sun spider in the mix. Sun Spider - better than you would think!

what is MSRP on the Crawler?
edit: found it: $1,419.99-$1,469.99
If you really like the nuvinci, I guess it is it may be worth the weight and price, but I think the On One Fatty is a much better deal than any of these "budget" fat bikes.
