58 BCD 5 arm inner chainring in 30, 32 or 34 tooth? Custom chainrings?

I am having a Heck of a time finding a 58mm BCD 5 arm inner chainring with a lot of teeth. I talked to the guy at Surly and he said I would have a hard time finding one--he was right.

Does anyone know where I could get these? The ideal candidate would be a black 58mm BCD 5 arm inner chainring in 34t, but 32t or 30t would serve.

I will be shifting down from 50t, so too few teeth and I will get unreliable shifts.

Also, I have been trying to find a reliable source of custom chainrings and, short of Warhawk who hasn't answered my emails, I could not find anybody in the world who makes custom chainrings! Are cyclists just going to their local machine shop for custom chainrings?

Maybe you could find a 100mm isis bottom bracket and an isis compatible compact road crank set. I think your 110 53 would fit on one and they go down into the mid 30s for the low. Both the bb and crank should be fairly easy to find.

58 typically just doesn't get bigger than that, it's reserved for the granny.

Typically cranks are 94/58 on the same arms. Lots of choices in 94 BCD for 30, 32, 34T. Can you use the inner side of the 94 for the 34T and the outer side for the 50T?

These are great ideas. I will check them out.

Spa Cycles in the UK might be cooking up some chainrings for me. They definitely have a 5 arm 58mm BCD inner chainring in 30T. I wonder if that would shift nicely with a 50T outer chainring.

You're running a 50 T on a fat bike? Astounded. Black spire makes chainrings.

I do have a motor because I refuse to own a car and this is my ride to work. I never bring up the electronics on mtbr because I respect that this is a bike forum. I am in the process of losing weight so I can get a road bike with another huge chainring. I love huge chainrings!

Just stop already with your electric motorcycle. You'd lose more weight if you did all of the work yourself.

I don't want the thread to get off topic, but I set up my gears so that I can still get plenty of exercise--I currently have a 46T chainring and 11T small cog in my freewheel. I definitely get a workout every time, and I have lost 65 lbs so far--that doesn't happen with a motorcycle.

As far as putting high gears on a Surly O.D. crankset, the highest I can find now is a Specialties T.A. 50T front chainring and Surly MWOD 26T to complement my Shimano MF-TZ30 6-speed 14-34 freewheel. This is OK for the low gear range, but 50T in front and 14T in the rear is probably not high enough to exploit my human power at cruising speed. For me, any cadence above 110 is overly turbulent.

    50T chainring:

    53T chainring:

It is really easy to a put a 110BCD 53T chainring on a Surly Mr. Whirly crankset with a 58/110mm spider. 110BCD chainrings up to 56T are also available.

    56T chainring:

I will probably sell my Surly O.D. cranksets and get Surly Mr. Whirly ones because I really like huge chainrings.

I bought some black 58T 110mm Vuelta SE Flat Chainrings: https://www.vueltausa.com/components...mm-34-60t.html

This becomes a much easier task when using a Surly Mr. Whirly crankset with the more common 110mm BCD. Thanks for all your help, guys.
