    27.5 summer trail combo

I need an advise on 27.5x4.0 combo for summer trail-riding and singletrack bikepacking, mostly dirt and loam. Looking for tires with good grip and cornering, how fast they will roll is secondary.

I was thinking about Gnarwhal 27.5x3.8 front (if I can find where to buy them) and Minion FBF or CakeEater rear.

Gnarwhal is a great front tire if grip is paramount. Great rear for the same reason. If rolling efficiency is secondary, Gnarwhal is hard to beat out back.

If Gnarwhal isn't to your liking out back, I'd lean toward a Hodag before Cake Eater, and both of those waaaaaaay before FBF or FBR. The Minions are great when things are dry, but sketchy when moisture is present.

I stock all of the above at all times.

Thanks, Mike. So Hodag in rear then. Why do you prefer Hodag over CakeEater?

Because it's better! More predictable traction, more durable casing, more supple ride.

Cake Eater wins if you need studs.

I run a hodag front and spec fast trak rear for summer in New England, works well.

I ran 27.5 x 3.0 Dirt Wizards two summers ago and Hodags last year. Both were excellent. I am now headed to the desert on 2.5 DHF/DHRs. Oops, can I post that in the fat forum?

Let's not make this thread a place where everyone shares his favorite tires. I was asking specifically for 3.8-4.0.

Dunno if this is helpful but I decided to build up a 27.5 B fat on 50mm rims for my summer rig. So far, so good. I'm running FBF F/R which are tires I like (have FBF 4.8/4.0 on 26/80 and loads of DHFs over the years). Very dry climate. Feels like a bit faster ride with most of the grip and fat bike feel.

tl;dr: if you like traditional fat bike feel, 3.8 27.5 is the sportier version
