Mountain Biking Newbie
Thoughts on a used Jamis X.20 for 6 year old?
Can't find any good reviews or information on the X.20 that I'm thinking about picking up for my kid. Not sure if I want to get a mountain-style bike or a BMX-style for 6 year old.
I would probably pick one up that is used...probably 2011 or 2009.
Only issues I can find are:
Front shocks might be a waste for kids at this age (adds to weight)
The crank might be too long
Not the lightest bike
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
2011 Specialized Epic Comp 26
1994 Specialized Hard Rock FS
Any idea what year it is? I've seen a couple of them and they seem pretty typical for kids mountain bikes. Useless forks, low-end components, and heavy as hell.
The biggest thing I look for are a 1-1/8" steerer for parts interchangeability. Most other things can be swapped out for lighter and/or better parts.
Sinz makes cranksets in about any length you need. I swapped 115mm on my daughters 20" HotRock. BTW. She started riding it when she was 6, and hasn't turned back.
I've also scrounged the local classifieds, and Ebay and managed to score a carbon fiber bar, short stem and Sinz aluminum pedals. Scrounged Avid Speed Dial brakes from my parts bin. and bought Sinz cranks, and front sprocket new.
Just recently upgraded to a Sram 8-speed X-9 gripshift and rear derailleur, which were used, and a KMC chain and 8 speed freewheel new.
She now has a much lighter, rock solid reliable bike.
The only thing I need to do now is find a short cage Sram derailleur. This long cage hangs way too low. I'm also looking into rebuilding her wheels with 18 spokes vs. 36 to shave a little more weight.
I actually have done more to her bike than my own this last winter.
