    Rust on a used bike

Was looking to pick up a used Specialized Hotrock 20" for my son. Found a couple in my area....one is a so-so deal, could be cheaper, but it has rust on two nuts at the tire axles....all on the same side...only thing is I can't tell if there is rust on the actual axle/screw. On the bike that is a really low price, there is rust on the nut as well as on the axle screw from what I can tell.

Do you think a little bit of rust is a problem if it's on the axle screw/bolt? If it's on the nut, that can be changed out...but not sure how to get ride of the rust if it's on the actual screw.

Any thoughts? Should I stay away from anything used that has rust?

I wouldn't worry too much if it's just surface rust. This is a bike that will be supporting what, 75lbs max? And topping out at what 15mph? Not speeds or weights that will come anywhere close to causing a failure. As long as is doesn't look like it's rusted through I say get the cheap one and clean it up.
