I've got some evs and some 661 youth stuff which I picked up at a very good price, and some the gear too.
The 661 stuff came out a bit bigger than expected, so my eldest is in those, they're still big but strap up ok and he's happy, and I guess he'll get chance to wear them out. Its good but I wouldn't want to pay full whack.

My son who is 5 yrs old uses these when riding down hill trails. Troy Lee Designs® | Protection in size small.

He also uses G-Form pads for other riding. Knee Pads - G-Form LLC They have
tons of sizes and they fit really nice.

Also check out Teva shoes here Teva® Crank C | Performance Mountain Biking Shoes at Teva.com
Best kids shoe for riding on the market. Sticky rubber just like the adult shoes.

I got the RaceFace Protekt youth shin guards, but I would recommend trying something else (maybe something like Demo9 suggested) as my son had rubbing issues behind his knees so he did not want to put them on. Not sure if it's a design flaw or if this was specific to my son though. I ended up cutting a light sock and having him wear that underneath. Not ideal. Other than that issue, they offer great protection.

+1 on the Teva's. Son loves them. Great sole.

For my 4 yr old I got some G-form pads, size XXS. they are pretty comfy and unobtrusive. Might not be the most protection for more aggresive kids though
