Long throw on left trigger shifter

My wife's, daughter's left, trigger shifter has too much throw or travel for my wife and daughter. It is not so much the strength needed to shift as the travel. My wife says her thumb is not big enough. She has a SRAM x3 trigger and my daughter has a Shimano Acera, and they are both the same. I got a spare x9, but do not know if it would be compatible with the X3, or really have much less travel?

Anyone know of a fix? Maybe I could replace the trig with a grip shifter?
    Thanks Bill

The travel is all the same for the front shifters/derailleurs. Maybe try rotating the shifter back a bit so that the motion is more up/down than forward/back. They can relax their grip and get more range of motion like this rather than chasing the lever under and out the front of the bars.

That is what I thought, and I did already rotate the shifter and it does help. Thanks
