changing solid axles to 9mm quick release

I just picked up a used 2010 Marin Hidden Canyon for my 7 year old. It came with a bolt on rear axle. I'd like to switch to a 9mm quick release to allow trailside tube replacement.

Is that a possibility? Do I need to completely disassemble the rear hub? Where can I get the hollow axle?

Remove the freewheel, use cone wrenches to remove the axle coned then take the axle to a local bike shop to have them match it up for a hollow replacement axle, should be easy and cheap for a decent bike shop to find one. Note that the QR axle will need to be shorter than the nutted axle so it does not extend past the dropouts.

Park makes these thin wrenches that are inexpensive and light, perhaps you can just get one of those? Just an idea.
