Started AM riding last year with a Trek Remedy 8. Took it out to Mountain Creek this past weekend and had such a blast (despite eating it several times) that I'm contemplating buying a DH rig.

Problem is, I can't afford a $6k bike.

Here's my question:

Let's say you were to buy a new $2,000.00 frameset (2012 Santa Cruz V10), how would YOU go about the rest of this build (with all new parts) to achieve the best compromise of quality while simultaneously not having your wife/girlfriend freak out on you for buying yet another expensive toy?

Or at the very least, what am I looking at ballpark for a complete build with medium grade components?

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I'm currently selling my 2011 Enduro Expert EVO and am going to be building a 2013 Enduro EVO frame from the ground up. The bike is perfect for the type of riding I do and love the single crown with the slacked out head tube angle. I've never been a weight weenie but figure I might as well since I'm building from scratch. I'm building this bike to be light but still be very DH/AM capable. I ride mostly in Whistler and the Pacific North West. Please give me your critiques as to things I should consider changing up.

My main questions:

1) Should I go for air or coil? Can't decide between a Fox Van 36/Cane Creek DB or a Fox Talas 36/Rock Shox Vivid air.

2) Can I run a Rock Shox Vivid Air on this bike?

Here is what I'm in the process of sourcing.

Frame Specialized Enduro EVO
Fork Fox Van 36 or Talas 36 (#1 Choice)
Rear Shock Cane Creek DB w/ Titanium (#1 Choice) or Cane Creek DB Air
Crankset Sram XX1
Rear derailleur Sram XX1
Cassette Sram XX1
Chain Sram XX1
Shifters Sram XX1
Brakes Shimano Saint
Brake Levers Shimano Saint
bottom bracket Sram PF30
pedals HT ME03T
wheels ENVE DH Carbon
seat post Easton Carbon
stem Easton Havoc 35
handlebars Easton Havoc 35 Carbon
Tires/Tubeless Maxxis Minion DHF 2.5

Thanks and can't wait for the feedback guys!

... back where an old ass dh bike is my friend!!! it's been over 5 years since I've done any real biking. Plagued with acid reflux and dealing with extremely painful bunions has kept me in the dark.. Well! the meds are helping to keep the acid down and the Doc hacked off about 1/4'' worth of bone off the right foot and good 1/2'' worth off the left. Took just about a year for them to heal and now I'm ready get my 31yearold broken ass back in some sort of shape!!! The puppy dog has been sleeping a lot since starting back up with jogging. 1st time in over 2 years since I/we have ran. 2 weeks ago we started with light 1mile jogs 3 times a week. She gets to swim in the pond to cool down and burn off more fat and I'm about to start swimming at the pool on base! Need to get back in shape for Mammoth and hopefully North Star! The aging straight 8 and myself are itching for some real mountain time! till them the weekend hike & bike will suffice
