My lower most pivot connection is loose. I can't get to it easily because the front chain rings are in the way. Do I need any special tools to remove the crank and rings in order to get at the pivots? It is a press fit bb. For the sake of clarity -- I have not looked at it too much. Just noticed that it was loose and kinda jankey after my ride today when I pulled up on the seat while putting the bike in the car. Basically I am trying to figure out if I can do this without a new tool or dropping it by the LBS. The cranks/bb/rings are XT.

I was in a fairly local bike shop yesterday and I was waiting on a guy who was trying to decide between one bike and another. He obviously had enough cash for it not to be a concern, but had no idea what he was getting.

He asked what alloy was, and whether the carbon version was faster than it... The guy who runs the store was sheepishly agreeing that carbon was indeed faster than the alloy version, but snuck an embarrassed side eye at me as he said that. I agreed whole-heartedly, and the customer immediately dropped over 6k on his carbon FS thing, all blinged up...

This got me thinking...

I don't care that someone chooses to drop his cash on an expensive bike, that's his prerogative, but he is just the tip of an iceberg of people that are equipped way beyond their capabilities. I would hazard an educated guess, an opinion formed by seeing many people out on the trail, that most of us are incapable of using all our bikes' possibilities. Many fall into the 'bling trap' and don't have a clue what they have between their legs, and, as the actress said to the Bishop, they wouldn't know what to do with it if they did...

Personally I am lucky enough to have 2 bikes, both with 5.5" travel front and back, altho one has a Lefty, and the other a Fox. Both were bought as great deals: the one of them I bought piecemeal online and put together gradually, saving a good 2.5k over full price overall; the second was a shop demo bike that had never seen dirt that I got at about half the ticket price. I have had them for nearly 3 years each and they do all I could want. When they break, I replace parts I get deals on online... I am very happy with them both, and if one is temporarily off the road, I have the backup. I like to ride them both equally, and they are all I need for the riding I like to do.

I suggest we all look at exactly what kind of riding we do, be honest about it, and make a comprehensive list of what we don't really need...

Then send it all to me :)

Hi
Let me apologize in advance if I am breaking a forum rule by posting this but I didn't see anything in the rules forbidding this so I thought I'd go ahead. My wife and I have a vacation rental in Cle Elum Wa. that borders the John Wayne Iron Horse Trail. Here is a link to the VRBO site Cle Elum Vacation Rental - VRBO 466600 - 3 BR North Central Cascades House in WA, Backyard Access to John Wayne Trail and Yakima River on 3-Acres We were recently contacted by a group of riders that wanted to rent it because they were going to ride the John Wayne Trail. If you're unfamiliar with the trail it is a great place for a long scenic ride here is a link John Wayne Pioneer Trail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anyway, if you and your family or friends are thinking about a biking vacation I hope you will consider staying with us. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Hi all.

I couldn't find a more appropriate forum to post in so I put it here, but please feel free to more this if I've missed something.

I'm looking for the aftermarket equivalent of the Kona Energy Bar (710mm, 0 degree rise, 12 degree sweep). Anyone know if such a beast exists? Or, does anyone know of a retailer who carries the actual Kona? So far, Google is failing me.

Thanks in advance.

Why are bike bells becoming so expensive??

I mean, really. I remember when a good, loud bike bell could be had for around $5-$5.49 and it got the job done. Now, they range from $7-$20 and have disco lights, compass balls, really cool designs like the Nutcase bells, and some don't actually ring all that well, at least not enough to make the unsuspecting hiker in front jump out of their shoes.

I think I represent most sensible riders who want a basic bell that sounds an effective alert and can be had for a reasonable price.

Are you listening bike accessories manufacturers?! Step away from the business model of fleecing all of us bell buyers, giving us really cool extra features we don't need, and get back to the basics.
