    Ultimate Endurance Race?

    http://www.tourdafrique.com/indextour.htm

I'd think an overbuilt, steel (so it can be rewelded when it inevitably breaks) 29er like a Karate Monkey would be perfect for this. A set of cross tires, road tires, and mtb tires (actually probably more like two sets of each) seems to be what you would want to be competitive, though I'd imagine most are just going to do the ride.

I don't think that I will be able to get the time off of work. 100 days.

From looking thru the website, I don't think it is a race
It just looks like a 100 day ride thru Africa. Still a test of endurance.

I saw something about this race when I was looking at the Belize race. Who can afford to do this race? Who can get that kind of time off? How many people actually do it?
    Ambitious, I'll give 'em that.

That's only $88 a day for a fully suppored race/tour. Food, lodging, gear portaging. Compareable to supported tours in the US. Expensive, yet reasonable.

too much of a good thing?

I would love to do a week long endurance race at least once in my life time. But 100 days??? that would probably kill my interest in cycling for ever.

    And I don't want that.

yeah, I guess looking at is as a race, too much. I'm just invisioning it as a tour. Like RAGBRIA or Ride the Rockies, except for 100 days, across Africa, the long way! From their FAQ page:

"Is it a race or a tour?

Tour d'Afrique is first and foremost a race. However, whatever your own aim we like to think of it simply as a personal challenge."

So who wants to give my wife and I $17600 so we can do this next year?!?
