    Do you have a favorite motivational quote that you may have to dig up 8, 10 or 12 hrs into a long event?

    A couple of my favorites:

    "whether you think you can, or think you can't, you're probably right"

    "you are better than you think you are, and you can do more than you think you can", this one may be familiar as it has been shared at the Leadville pre-race meeting.

    I really like this as it ties closely into our world of endurance racing. I apologize it is sexist but it doesn't matter who you are it applies to all of us:

    Is it that I will not want to suffer more or that I can not suffer more?

    I have 2 custom stem caps that I had created at One says "pain is just weakness leaving the body." The other says "be the pig" -- short for "When it comes to breakfast, the chicken contributes. The pig is committed. Be the pig." I also like "Training hard sucks. But not as much as sucking sucks." 16 hours into a 24 solo a friend told me "if this is hard for you, imagine how much harder it is for all those other chumps out here." 20 hours into that same race she told me "it sounds like you are experiencing a bad case of being a whiny little b!tch. Let me prescribe you a heavy dose of man the f@ck up!"

    I don't race on the road anymore, but I am still a fan of road racing. My favorite motivational quotes are from one of the all-time great, mostly unsung, hard men, Jens Voight.

    I've collected a few; believe it or not, I even wrote a few of them myself!
    Some of these are from roadies, some are just lessons learned and things i try to keep in mind to keep me grounded in the fact that I'm just a weekend warrior. :) Enjoy and share.

    Not necessarily a quote, more of a technique...

    I imagine that the riders ahead of me are the prey and/or that the riders behind me are hunting me. Or that I'm escaping an invading army or something. Whatever it takes to stir up a primal life-or-death type of mentality. Sometimes it's the only way to trick your mind into letting your legs go harder.

    Kidding aside had a coach who drilled giving 110% into us. So when I have to start digging I think about giving %110. If you can maximize that mental side you can push a lot farther on the physical side.

    pain is temporary is pretty much my motto. Also I just yell as loud as I can when racing and it seems to summon any energy I have left (kinda weird but it works).

    Pain is temporary, glory is for............a week or so!

    This got me through my last 4hr race when I was hurting so bad. Made me smile and reminded me that when I stopped all the pain would go away in a few seconds.
