Sounds really cool, but the Coolest Race was just moved to that same weekend. So two 8 hours races that same day.

That's unfortunate. Our date is the same weekend as last year, has been on our website and in banner ads here on MTBR since March.

He wanted to, but he has a full schedule in the weeks before and even Tinker needs a recovery weekend once in a while! Too bad, he was looking forward to catching more trout from Kirkwood Lake.

Here's his sched, pretty impressive stuff for anyone, especially for a 50 year old!
July 23, XC, Master World Championship Brazil
July 30, Butte Montana 100 miler
Aug 4-11 Big Bear Lake -- altitude training
Aug 13, Leadville 100 mi races

    Vic,

Is there going to be a woman's MTB clinic there? I thought I saw something about it on the 26th? I want to bring my daughter to do it. I plan on doing the 8 hour solo...

Wow, we were just contacted by the Rock Star Lodge at Kirkwood. They have the most affordable lodging on the mountain AND the course goes right by it. Riders could pit right out of their unit. Nice!

They have singles, 2-bedroom and 4-bedroom units, with kitchens.

We arrived at Kirkwood yesterday morn and yesterday eve took a hike up the course. It's gonna be great!

The lower section of the course is on the Roby Wolfe Trail, a new trail built just last year. We used it last year for the 24 Hours of Kirkwood and when it was still new and loose, but now that it's had a winter on it most of it has hardened up just fine. Some of the corners that were moon dust last year are now solid----no berm blasting this year!

And then there's the whole scenic aspect...yeah, I know...most of you will be more concerned about the next corner than about the gajillions of wildflowers blooming all around you....but I swear this mountain is still smack dab in the middle of springtime!

    WHAT A GREAT WEEKEND!

Kirkwood is a favorite venue for many of our racers. A few called ths year's course "The best Team Bigfoot course ever.." which is quite a statment considering the awesomeness of our 12 Hours of Humboldt, 12 Hours of Weaverville and Whiskeytown Nine to Five courses. Part of the appeal this year was the leftover snowpack in the upper reaches of Kirkwood that had the creeks flowing, the waterfalls cascading and the wildflowers in full bloom.
    THAT ZZ-TOP GUY
George Dunkum always has a good time and nearly always gets top 3 in the Super-Masters. He won this time in the Kirkwood Nine to Five

    FAST AND FIT
Ellen Sherril did nine laps in the Kirkwood Nine to Five to take the overall solo win. She's a Tahoe local and is well versed in the ways of higt Sierra singletrack.

    PURTY STUFF!
    Wildflowers? Yeah, Kirkwood's got 'em!

    HARD AT WORK
Kirkwood's main mountain bike guy Ricky is also the head of their mountain resuce crew. Ricky spent his day cruising laps of the course to "make sure there were no downed riders on course."
    Right Ricky.

    SPLISH SPLASH
Only the bravest of riders will splash water on the event promoter AND his Nikon!

    THE TIRED, THE PROUD
The 24 Hours of Kirkwood awards hosted a room full of tired, groggy racers. But the table full o'schwag perked 'em all up. Solo winners all got Kirkwood ski passes. The oveall solo winner man and woman each got light systems from Jet Lites, and nearly all of the riders came away with goodies from Kenda, Cannondale, Marin, Sock Guy, Hammer Nutrition, EX Sports Drinks...and of course, tortilla chips from Bien Padre!
A big hairy Bigfoot thanks to all who raced. What an awesome weekend! We'll be back again in 2012 for more high Sierra fun and beauty.
