Smile Totally Unofficial Tuesday Night Fun Series Smackdown @ Albion Thread

Well folks, if the sun can penetrate the forest even though it's only 4C at the moment, perhaps we will be racing in just over a month from now in one of the more funner race series in the GTA.

It's been a long winter and some of you have been training and letting us know how fast you are while riding and going nowhere. Myself included on occasion! Beware as it's almost time to put your winter work to the test and hopefully not get embarrassed as the season swings into gear in about five weeks time.

Some have switched to or from gears, from hardtail to full suspension, or vice versa. Regardless of how fast or slow anyone is, it's almost time to go and have a good rip and a beer, or two, on a weekly basis. Hopefully we see some old faces back out there this season.

Now, as this is usually a trash talk thread, let's not get away from it. I have goals to get through a chunk of the field in front of me now that I am starting with the mid-life crisis group. It's going to be a tough slog out there, so any competitors, please feel free to have that extra handful of chips or beer in the next few weeks! You know who you are... Looking forward to another good season of off road riding, when it finally arrives!

    Who's in?

I'm in, to the extent it does not interfere with my weekend race schedule. I will mostly be campaigning on my singlespeed again, but may bust out my shiny new geared bike (or perhaps my restored Rocky Mountain if the %^&^%^&^$ thing ever gets painted) on occasion.
    Strava made me do it....

Aha! I don't think I've puked from riding since 2011, I *think* its under control.

For me its just a toss up of what to do with so little time. I work in Bolton, Albion is close. I live in Milton, Kelso series is also close. When do I want to do the driving, before or after. And then... would I rather sneak in 90kms on the road. I'll probably just mix it up and do a bit of each, I doubt I will do full season, but we'll see. MTB might be a bit more friendly on my troublesome achilles so I'll have to see closer to the date depending on how that is doing.

Having no kids, you can do all of those save for being at Kelso (which is lame for variety) and Albion at the same time.😉

I live in Waterdown...so I am really struggling with the idea of driving to Albion, when the Kelso series is right here.

I did a few Albion races last year and it was a blast. Unfortunately like Riot, 25 minutes is more appealing thank 1h15, especially with later work commitments on Tuesday.

So I'll be out for the Kelso series this year, but if I were to go to Albion, you'd all be in big trouble!

Riot, lets highjack this thread and trash talk about Kelso. You riding in your skirt this year?

Keep in mind, Riot and Cpt, that the Kelso series does not start until the end of May, so you have a whole month to put your money where your mouth is at Albion...

Is that the view you are requesting, cause you are only going to ever see me riding away from you.

My 2 sons and I are in. We'll sign-up for the whole series. We were a little underwhelmed with "MTB camp" last season. I'm sure this will be a lot more fun and laid-back.

Get there and be on your bike by 6.30 and you should have plenty of time to get your plate, and do a bit of a warm up if not pre-ride the entire course, which is usually about 5km. First wave starts at 7pm sharp.

    Oh yeah, I'm in too!

I heard, from Clive, that Sean was planning to do registration and first race, on the same night?

I don't have Sean's email handy to reach out, perhaps someone can get the inside scoop.

Totally Unofficial Tuesday Night Fun Series Smackdown @ Albion Thread

After a couple years away from this series, I'm really looking forward to it. Now that I don't have to make the excruciating drive up from the city, I'm electing to ride to Albion. An extra 40km in the legs will effectively remove me from the competition ensuring this series is for fun only! See you all tonight!

Good way to get extra mileage. I'll be riding up from Bolton. Maybe I'll see you out on Duffy's lane! Also excited to return to this series. I am just doing it so Sean can stop giving me that where the hell have you been look.

Haven't seen the results posted yet on the superfly site.

Twas a fun night. Course was fun. nspace and I battled it out most of the race. He unfortunately was schooling me on the singletrack and carrying his speed better (like most singlespeeders can). This caused me to push hard on the singletrack climbs to close the gaps. This eventually caught up to me on the third lap and he pulled away.

Felt so good to get back to Tuesday night racing. CptSydor, that was a great battle...that lasted for the better part of the race, thats for sure. You were pushing hard which forced me to do the same. Can't wait until next week!

In addition to the full-season race fee, I discovered you have to purchase a licence, which in my case would be $135. WTF?

I'm not blaming Superfly in any way. I would have been happy to give them my money.
Very dissappointed with the licence fee.
So much for getting kids into racing.

I'll have to leave it to the locals to comment with some certainty, but I'm fairly certain you don't need a full UCI license and instead can participate in this series with a much less expensive citizen permit only, unless you are saying that it's $135 total for your entire family of three to get their citizen permits.

Yep. I've only ever raced with a Citizen's Permit. These are now $55 ($40 for under 19s). UCI Adult membership is $158.

Local says: $135 is for 3 citizen permits.

UCI is more than that for a single one.

Thanks! I'll have to leave it to the locals then to put forth their opinion of the value of an additional $135 amortized over the duration of an entire weekly race series for a family of 3, compared to any number of other ways that one could spend $135 at the blink of an eye. Better if it was free, of course, and family activity expenses have an insidious way of adding up, but still...

    ^This.
My problem is that the licence is in addition to the race fee.
That's $355 for the racing + $135 for the licences.
$490 Could buy a lot of Doritos.

The season is expensive. I don't believe you need the citizen permit to race a couple of races and you can pay for individual races too ( I believe). Maybe try a couple of races this year, see whether the boys enjoy them and then make a decision about next year? (Although that could get really expensive in a short amount of time too)(Maybe you should sell the kids? I'm kidding (maybe))
I only raced the Tuesday night series for two years a couple of years ago. I had way more fun than I ever thought I would.
    Cheers, Dave

The kids should be profit centres if you play it right. I give them 20 points on an 80/20 split for whatever they earn running the lemonade stand on weekends or mowing lawns for the neighbours. Out of my 80 points I pay for all their activities and registration fees so that it doesn't impact my lifestyle, and pocket the rest for my beer and personal entertainment.

    OK, not really...
