Toronto Bicycle Spring Show - It's that time of the yr again...

Just FYI for those people thinking of buying a new ride

    http://www.telsec.net/bicycleshow/

I went to last yr's spring show and picked up a road bike and loved it. But I didn't check out prices for components, and that's what I mainly need now given my MTB ride is going on 2yrs (somethings are wearing out).

Anyhow, do you think this yr the vendors are going to have a lower price because almost all my friends i know across Canada now are ordering from the states with such a weak US dollar. The bike show you can wheel and deal a little on whole setups but I'm looking for bars, grips, shoes, brake pads, tires mainly. Maybe a 32oz Jug of White LIghtning if they have it hahah

    Your thoughts?

My thoughts are that I will go as I do every year, and in hopes yet again of scoring more good deals

I love the bike show, and I never miss it.

I would also assume the prices might even be lower because of the situation with the dollar!

    Will be good times

First year going and I'm hoping to find some cheap prices on bikes. Looking for Titus Moto lite or a Ibis Mojo. Are the prices really a lot better or is it a rip off.

I will be attend again this year.

I hopes are to be able to do the 4x race again, missed out last year my son was very sick (18 hrs in the hospital).

I have a look around at the various venders for deals to. Typically Cycle Solutions has the best product and ok prices. They deal primarly with MTB products.

I like checking out the new product for 2008, even though it has all been posted on the web and in the mags. It is cool to see it first hand.

I am disappointed that last year the Metro Jam was downgraded. I watch the 2 years previous and was glued to my seat - what those guys can do on a bmx is just nuts. They take it to a level way above everyone else.

Bike show the typical season kick-off.

All over the map. It's luck of the draw. When you see a deal you think is good (if it really is indeed good) you have to just go for it. I picked up one of the Specialized Allez road bikes from the fall show last year from Broadway cycles. I believe there were 5 of the same model in different sizes. By the time I decided I'd buy one and tripping over people to test fit it, the last one was being sold as I headed to the checkout. I figure they were all gone in about 20-30 minutes of the show opening. There are some good deals on bikes, but you really do have to bite when you find what you want. Or else it'll sell to the guy waiting in line behind you. Very thick crowds.. haha.

^^ dude man just fork over the money for a 1uptrainer...seriously money well spent in that dept, no regrets buying it. Using my Spec. Roubaix on it right now and it's a dream cuz it's so quiet compared to my other trainer.

I find the spring show is way better than the fall show. The shows are OK but it's not that full of deals like everyone thinks. Most of the sale prices are right around the same as online prices. But every once in a while you find something sweet so that makes it worth going.

If you want the cat's behind for trainers get a Tacx I-Magic. They're more expensive than some bikes, but I've used mine for the past 3 years and abso-freaking-lutely love it. It's a Virtual Reality trainer. Totally worth the cashola since our winters are so damn long.

By the way, Phelan, send me an email to bikerider (at) cogeco.ca. I've got a big jug of White Lightning, but I don't use that type anymore. We'll work something out.

As for the bike show, I go every year and usually pick a few things up. I'd recommend printing out a list of what you need and then go online and write down the best prices you can get (but factor in shipping, duties etc.). This way you know wether you're getting a real deal or just hype.

Only full bikes and safety equipment (helmets, bells, lights, etc).

It's great for a new helmet or nice trail lights, but there are not too many complete bikes I'd be interested in under 1k and it does not apply to components.

This is my first year going to the show, I hear good things about it so I can't wait to go!! I had a question about the test ride area, when you want to test ride a bike do they have a little track set up with maybe some obstacles or something?
    Cheers,

They do have a large paved area where you can test ride bikes, but nothing akin to real riding. For these shows, its best to come in informed and know what you're going for.
Some great sets for the trainer:

HA HA...yeah the 'test area' is pretty pathetic. Like SLR says, know what you want before you arrive. Basically the test area is good to see if it fits you properly.

Only reason i'm going this time around is to see Misfit's super secret prototype!

    Oh, wait ..... sorry Peter.

And check out his booth. Apparently we won't need lit coal miner's helmets this time 'round. (tweety bird in a cage still optional)

Newbie here. Is the server always this slow?

What kind of prices can one expect at the show? For bikes specifically.

And can someone recommend any dealers that offer good service/price? Someone said on pinkbike about staying away from Cheapskates. I have no problem with that, they are a local dealer. I've had nothing but bad experiences with them.

So let's have some recommendations. Thanks.

The $13 entrance fee is really cheap considering you can save $200-? on a new bike, and the deals on clothes and parts. I hope I can make it this year, bought a bike at the last spring show, now looking for some lightweight parts or cheap Sidi Dominator 5s.

Hi Guys, due to the potential terrible weather on Saturday, I was thinking of driving to the show on Sunday. Does anyone know if a lot of the shops are pretty much cleaned out by Sunday?

I've never been to the show before and I would have a 3 hour drive to get there. With this winter I have a huge itch to get out biking and this is the next best thing. Basically I just want to see in person whats new for 2008. Do you think its worth the drive?

    Thanks,

Some of the shops exhibiting have $1 off coupons. Duke's would have been the closest shop to pick one up but due to the fire that destroyed their store and half the block, I'm not sure who else might have them in the vicinity. I'm just glad to hear that they will have a booth at the show still. Want to drop by and say hi to everyone there.

Well was down there today and bought some shoes from Dukes

I was a little disappointed by the amount of vendors, i was expecting more of a "sale" and compared to U.S. prices given the high dollar Just my 2 cents, but did score a few goodies from the Trek warehouse store (14.99 nike arm and knee warmers come on...). For those of you wanting to buy bikes...well there's plenty of dealz to be had.

The Trek outlet has some good deals. Picked up some Bontrager 29er 2.2 tires for 20 bucks a pop, and a Bontrager race saddle for 10 bucks, as well as Bontrager big sweep wide flatbar for 10 bucks.

If anyone is looking for brakes,,,,the Trek outlet thing had Avid Juicy Carbons (complete set front and rear) for 279..... Usually those are something like 170 per wheel?

I am not just sayng this because I was helping out/affiliated with the Misfit Psycles booth, but the new Ti prototype was the highlight of the show for me. What a f***king beautiful frame and build!

I did pretty well at the show.

I picked up a road bike, MTB tires, MTB shoes as planned.

Road pedals and shoes, a jacket and a Camelbak Dream for my GF.

I got a Specialized Allez Elite from Dukes as well as Specialized Expert MTB shoes.

I got a pair od Adidas road shoes for $50 and Camelbak for $40 from Browns.

Shimano 540 road pedals for $60 and 4 Nike T-shirts for $20 from Reynolds.

A Nike windstopper jacket form the Trek Store for $40.

Specialized Fast Track Pro tires from Cycle Solutions for $25 each.

Lots and lots of bikes to be had.

Thinking of trying to get there Sunday as the snow is flying now and it wouldn't be a nice drive. My question to those that have been there are the prices that good when compared to American prices? Because of the high dollar my main gripe with Canadian retailers is the huge difference in pricing. I was thinking about getting a new bike and there currently is a 400-600 dollar difference on the Canadian and US pricing. Are the prices good enough at the bike show to bring them inline with each other?

The Trek outlet had a 9.9 and 9.8 for 1600 and 1500 (both demo'd). I thought they were among the best deals at the show.

where those 2008's? Did you see any of the new 2008 Fuel EXs and what were the prices? I was thinking to go looking for a ex8.

No, 2007's. There were a few new Fuel EX's that i saw. I believe it may have been an EX 8 for $2600 (2007 model though). I could be mistaken though.

Arek, no love for the bike show?

I didn't see a lot of the people I thought I'd see there. Unless they didn't stop into the Misfit booth *shifty eyes*

I must have missed the misfits booth. I circled that place 3-4 times and never came across it. Thought I must admit, my primary focus was on clothing deals. I did stare in awe at the True North bikes for quite a while. Homemade Canadian bikes just make me smile. There will be one in my stable soon enough.

While I didn't check out the bike prices very much, the deals on most other things were pretty 'ordinary'. The drive from Hamilton on Saturday was just barely worth it. I picked up tires, knee warmers and a helmet, all which could have been had at similar prices at local bike shops, online or MEC with suitable sales/discussion (thought I'm happy to support 'local' shops even if not immediately local). What made it worth while were the bib/shorts. I picked up 3 quality sets for a price that could not have been matched at any other venue.

The best score for me was picking up a road map of Hamilton and Niagara regions that clearly laid out the bike/trail paths, high volume, low volume and gravel roads. As a newly converted roadie, these maps will have substantial value.

    Sunday in T.O.

I just got back from the show and got some great deals from ZM cycle.

    I got a XT cassestte at 40% off for $84 . . .

And 2 SRAM 9 speed chains at 40% off for $30 each.

I also saw the new Cannondale Rise and Scalpel Team at the Duke's booth, but they wouldn't sell them.

I took a picture of the Rise. It's a bit blurry but I'll try to post it anyway...

I agree this Misfit booth was hard to find, for some strange reason. I did drop by a couple times however. The bikes looked pretty good, though I'm a bit baffled by some of the component choices. To me nspace's new black/gold looks better than any of the bikes at the show. If they got rid of that awful red chain the Ti bike might have done more for me

The TN booth was great, as expected. The bikes they put together for the show were really top notch, and it's pretty cool to know that some of the owners of those bikes are friends. Mine will be done soon - I can't wait! I'm looking forward to demoing the black/red 29er that was at the show as well, to see how that Pace suspension fork handles, as well as the '09 XT 29er wheels.

If not quite a bit higher. You had to look very hard for deals at the show. I was happy to grab a Catlike Whisper for $65 though - well below wholesale I believe, and I even got the colour/size I wanted.

An XT cassette can be had for $60 at Wheelworld right now. If you shipped ONLY that item (which would be pretty dumb), it would come out to ~$80.

i didn't buy anything mainly for the fact that i could find most stuff for at least the same price online. there was nothing that i [ihad[/i] to have, but i still think it was worth going. would have bought a rear fox float if it had been the right size.

Overall i thought the show was pretty weaksauce this year. Usually i go looking for older parts and accessories that have been discontinued, however there was nothing of the sort this time around.

Also, i was helping friends with their purchasing, and it seems that most retailers weren't willing to move on the bike prices which seemed to be a bit higher than previous shows. I guess the hard winter was tough to swallow, and they cant afford to sell at blowout prices.

I did bump into quite a few folk that i havent seen since the warm summer racing days, and it was good to catch up.

the drive home to Guelph was also fantastic, a solid 2.5hrs in blizzard like conditions.
Some great sets for the trainer:

    No show...

No show for me this year, wasn't going to chance the drive from London, weather being the big deciding factor, and I usuall ygo, mainly to get pumped up for the upcoming mtb season, aw well, next year, and with the first few races less then a month away, hopefully my new TN cross bike will be ready!! Can't wait!! for P2A, Lake to Lake, and the 24 hours races!!

I'm sure there were lots of sweet deals to be had, I usually try to score on the old school, unwanted stuff, old cnc'ed anodized parts.

back to the trainer for now.

I was thinking more around $55 for that cassette (assuming you include it in a larger order to get free shipping)

No, I decided not to go. Didn't really "need" anything, as Peter already set me up
Can't wait for the season to start (which by the look of things won't be till mid-May...).

Saw your pics on flickr, great looking booth and setup! That bike must have been THE bike to see at the show for sure.

Like others, I found the show to be somewhat disappointing. Certainly not as many bargains to be had as in previous years.

I went with a shopping list of things to buy, and managed to only get half of them. Did get a killer deal on 2x Tioga mud tires for $10 each. Also got gloves, lube, saddle and the best deal at the show....IMBA membership for $20, with a free pair of socks
    It's only pain......

I guess going Fri , half an hour after opening worked for me .
    - Sram 990 cassette for was tagged at $110 and the clerked offered
it to me for $89 .
Cheapest online price was $75 US (without shipping) .
    - tubes @ $2.00 each .
    - large bottle of White Lightning lube for $5.00
    - Sram 591 chain for $19.95
    - Ergon grips for $9.99 (bought 2 pair)
    - Dualcross LED light set for $125 (reg. $200)

I almost bought a small hydration pack for $19.95 ( bladders alone are $13 )
and a pair of sun glasses with three sets of lenses for $25 but
I had run out of money .
I was also looking for a Mtb stem but most that I saw were either road
    or DH ones .
The few Mtb ones I did happen to see were in the $80 and up range :-0
Ahh , the thrill of the hunt ;-)

As mentioned , there didn't seem to be so many deals that you had problems
    deciding what to buy .
Also didn't seem to be as many retail booths there either .
This just may be because there were a lot of them that you cruised in , looked at
what they had to offer and quickly decided that either there is nothing here I need or
these prices aren't good enough for me to open my wallet .
If it's not a screaming deal , I'd rather put the money into my local shops till .

I had to laugh at one of the clerks at Sporting Life .
I asked him if they had any of the multi tools ( that are made by Cannondale ) that slide
into the steerer tube of the Lefty .
He said he never heard of them .
I guess that's what happens when you have a multi product store .
Staff selling ski's one day , bathing suits the next .
If you do good in those , we'll promote you to bikes the next .

Even though the weather for the drive back wasn't as bad as it was for those of
you on Sat , it still took 3 hrs to get back to London .
We passed a 9 vehicle pile up in the East lane in Guelph .
They were backed up all the way to Woodstock

I didn't think the Misfit booth was hard to find at all, it was right in the middle across from the Trek booth and around the corner from True North, just outside the boundary for the retail marketplace. Perhaps some people were looking for orange construction fencing in the dark corners of the retail area. Nope, Peter stepped it up a notch with a great looking booth.

Friday was good, Saturday was packed full of creepers, and Sunday was marginally better.

I picked up a Gary Fisher Rig demo that was in awesome condition (picked it up for the fork); rest of it will be up on craigslist this week (if anyone is interested let me know). I may part it out.

Also picked up some Bontrager 29er tires for 20 bucks a pop, normally they go for around 50 each, as well as a Bontrager Race saddle for $10.

Yeah, it was a bummer this year. The only deal I saw was a shop selling a boat load of X-country jerseys of the Discovery Team which is no longer a team for $20.

Here are some pics of the different bike Comp.

No offense taken here, and please don't take that as a knock against the bikes. I guess I neglected to mention that in general I really like what you're doing. I was only pointing out that a bike with a $650 (MSRP) headset had a painted BMX style chain

well obviously the wipperman ti would have been THE option...alas, visa said no more.

as for the chain...perhaps to the untrained eye that was a mere painted bmx. it was in fact a KMC Z610HX with a proprietary NANO finish...something that took MONTHS after interbike for me to negotiate with KMC...to the best of my knowledge i am the only person with the Z610HX in colours...so it is unique in its own right...if not proper-bling-arific.

the bead blast finish that TrueNorth used would have been nice too...next year!

Cool. The Wipperman Ti would have been very nice indeed!

While we're talking chains, can you fill me in on why a few of your bikes were set up with a half-link (right next to what appeared to be a Wipperman Connex link)? With the sliding dropouts I would have thought them unnecessary.

I thought there were some great deals at the show as long as you

    a) knew exactly what you wanted
    b) knew exactly how much you were willing to spend on it
    c) waited until the last hour of the show and helped the vendors make loading the truck a coupla bikes easier.

Got some very reasonably priced 2007 road bikes for me and the missus. They'll be put to very good use training for Crank the Shield.

Oddly, I had no trouble finding the Misfit booth. I could sense the aura of the 110 Reserve from across the room!

    Beautiful booth, Peter!

I've noticed that almost every year as well. I think it is because MTBers want a road bike for fitness reasons, but are not willing to pay what they are worth.

Is there more markup on road bikes?

I know some markdowns on road bikes are sometimes nearly a full grand off the list price.

I went on fri and saw some ok deals but wasnt that impressed with most stores. I was going to pick up a road bike too but my senses came back.

I saw Cyclesolutions selling a rear disc hub for like $10 even though its a long discontinued model it wouldve been ok to build a wheel up for whatever. I was looking for some items but like last year noone seemed to have them or if they did they were still crazy high prices even with some slashing.

Those Sram hubs your talking about looked really janky. I picked one up to inspect it further and it seemed like the 6-bolt disc mount was screwed onto the hub as a separate piece. Seemed kind of loose. I wouldn't put any faith in those things.

Those Sram 9 rear hubs are not too bad, I got one and now I'm lacing up a new wheel.
Yep they are a bit on a heavy side but good quality, super smooth. Just right for slicks to do some tarmac.

i have king hubs and mavic hubs with a similar mounts attached to them. no problems with it. i thought about picking up a few, but decided against it.

The 990 has been on sale for weeks at Beyondbikes and still is ($62.95)...the only reason I know is because I picked one up along with a bunch of other stuff. Shipping was almost nil for the cassette since I had a large order (and the dollar was above par which helped). I really enjoyed the show and will continue to go forever but for most major purchases I think on-line is usually better if you look around, are not in a hurry to get the part/bike and the CDN$ stays fairly strong. Having said that, my wife picked up a great deal on a SC Juliana at the show. I guess the bottom line is just shop around - due to the stronger CDN$ we have more options than before.

I don't think that perceived sense of savings is worth
    it with Beyond Bikes .
They have sooo much bad press with their mail order
business that it's not worth the risk dealing with them .
The issues they have is just too far out of my comfort
zone to bother with them .

Thanks..you beat me to it. We all have our favorite on-line shops and least favorites but they pretty much all price match. I feel pretty lucky in that I haven't had problems with any of them yet (touch wood) but among the people I know, I've heard of problems with pretty much all of them so I can respect your concerns.

Edit - This post and the one above (saturnine's which referenced/quoted ccaddy's) were replies to ccaddy's post above and somehow became disconnected?!? Hmmm.....what's going on?
