I liked that race. Probably because I had a good group to ride with the whole time.
I liked the ridiculous slushy rail trail section and secretly hope it is a big mess again this year!

Great early season training race in preparation of P2A.

In all honesty, I didn't find the race that exciting. The starting rail trail, then the return trip was certainly 'epic', but after that it was 50-60 km of gravel roads. The ADD in me much prefers something like P2A where the terrain gets mixed up every 1-5km (and why I can't really road race effectively as I get bored and usually dropped). It was however neat racing by horse and buggy and certainly puts some race in the legs before P2A.

Still sounds tempting. Especially as I may not treat this years P2A as a race: a team-mate of mine is doing this years P2a as his first race after a long injury-related absence (there was a time when it was up in the air whether he would ever race again). There is talk of us doing the race together with me acting as his Domestique. Assuming I can keep up with him (he was pretty fast back in the day and may still be capable of putting the hurt on me)

This was one of the toughest most fun races of the year last year. Plus, great prep for the season. I will be doing it again. I actually like the gravel road, forcing you to focus mentally (enough to stay aware and pushing), to keep the physical effort up.

    IN.

    Race Summary:

Sphincter pucker over the ice on cross tires.
    Don't spook the horses.
Okay spook the horses cause you need to go with that guy who's spooking horses.
Children watching you quietly from the side of the road.
Into the wind and uphill for 10km.
Out of the wind and downhill for 1km.
Into the wind and uphill for another 5km.
Onto the rail trail home. I totally got this.
100M into the rail trail home. OSHITOSHITOSHIT.
Why can't I shift, oh my derailleur is frozen.
Decide if suffering in the big ring during the last section is worth the water you're about to use to get to your granny gear so you can get through said "Rail Trail".
    Use water anyway.
Break massive icicle of snot off your face for finish line photo op.
    Cross finish line.
Post ride body shakes as the heat leaves your body.
Brain reacts to warm food the exact way it did in college after a good buzz on.
    BEST FOOD EVER.
    Drive home.
Post on MTBR about how race sucked, looking forward to it again.
    See you in 2015.

It's like the start of a group ride where people say it's an easy recovery ride, or their legs are toast from a hard ride the day before...you know it's just not going to end well...

Never trust anything a Canadian endurance athlete says.
