More horse poo (and harder to spot with all the leaves)

Maybe the Pugsley should get a leaf blower mounted on the front so I can see where I'm going.
Problem is, I think all the leaves are actually helping to maintain trail conditions....

Good, but soft, about 5-7 puddles in narrow spots, so they are really getting gouged out as it's hard to get around.
    The Pines are still "A+",
Main open trails a "B" (an "F" if you hit the poo!),
the back technical section "C-" (due to it being really easy to get lost or off the trail in the leaves, but traction is still possible.)

A bit of sawdust or fill in the puddles would be nice, but the official use of the trails (and allowance for actual maintenance and signs) is still coming.

The turds are a bit of a challenge, specially when there's steam rising off them.

    Trails are frozen and ride-able?
  • 12-24-2012

I ride there. The drainage is good. Anything much above zero and the top layer out in the open melts and gets slippery. The rest of the place stays frozen though. The roots are well hidden by leaves and are quite slick.

Definitely ridable today and the rest of the week. Have fun.

Was there tonight, conditions are great. Some of the singletrack is too deep to roll thru, there's lots of other areas to stretch your legs out. The Pines are good to go, there's no ice and the snow is packed down nicely. A good base that you can even get a decent lean into.

    Have fun!

I rode there late Thursday afternoon, -4C. Trails were great. Ground was frozen, and at most 1 mm of fresh snow covering it. No ice. All trails (pines, hardwoods) are ridable.

edit: DOH! I can't post images until I have 10 posts. But I posted some on my blog. PM me if interested.

Friends have mentioned that its 70% passable, lots of the double and some of the singletrack is packed down and rideable. The ice here in Waterdown was brutal yesterday, completely unpassable and dangerous as I don't run studs...

I might try Puslinch on Sunday as well.

Got there Sunday afternoon - Double track whicjh was more like single track was a treat to ride. Pines was a bit bumpy with more ice sticking through the snow - not so fun. Yah, those are some of the extremely "colloquial" terms applied to some of the loops. I don't know who named the loops on the WCC map. Gay Trucker refers to the "Twisted Siesta" section on the WCC map; The Dark Side pretty much references the red loops on the South side of tract.

Did a few laps on the double track, where a kind snowmobiler has paked down a path so we can stretch our legs... Snow was nice and fast, a little icy on the north side leading into the trails, but not enough to turn me around.

Don't know about that - seems everytime we get a decent snowfall, before it gets a chance to firm up we get a thaw that turns it icy.

I was having fun on Saturday..... until I had a little get off into some bushes. Of course, the middle finger has to snag one of the branches as my hand passes through the bush. I wasn't sure if I broke it at 1st because it was at such a weird angle. Luckily it was just a severe sprain. I rode out, and now the finger is the size of sausage. Can't hardly bend it, guess I'll just road ride for a while. I was going so slow, damn.....

  • 03-11-2013

No luckily not broken. Just a bad sprain. I could see the internal bleeding begin almost minutes afterwards. In the worst version of the sprain I could have actually torn the ligament off the bone. Didn't happen. Swelling is down substantially today, and I'm already getting quite a bit of motion back. It will be few months ore more though before it's right again.

Such a great spot to ride. I would expect conditions will be good on the weekend - I'll be there on Sunday.
I didn't realize how much deadwood there was in the pines. After that wind we've had, there is deadfall everywhere. Some on the trail, a couple in bad spots. Not sure what the status is on trail maintenance - haven't heard anything more from the plans back in 2011.

A heads up to the riders at Puslinch, there has been an obscene amount of trail modification, someone is pulling rocks and boulders out of the trail leaving behind craters that are hidden under the leaves.

Riders, Hikers and Equestrian are at risk for injury because of this kind of action, hopefully someone catches the party involved and makes an example of them. Many of the rock features have been disassembled. This has been going on all week, it looked like someone was doing it this morning, the displaced rocks were stil wet on the bottom.

Most of what I saw was in the Hardwoods, with a few areas in the Pines as well.

    WTF?

That's really unfortunate. Could be any number of reasons why various types of trail users (maybe a mountain biker, maybe not) who might think this is an improvement to the trail. Someone very new to mountain biking who is local to the area might be thinking this is better for them to ride with small kids, or safer, or anything else similar without realizing this is the character of the trail and desirable in many cases. Hopefully someone will come across the person doing this "work" and educate them. Maybe some signage needs to be posted by the landowner, or at least with the landowner's permission?

Yea I've seen a few this year. However, I've also seen cops patrolling the area for motorized vehicles. I even happened to see a couple MX'ers get busted and handed tickets!

Regarding the trail modifications, something is definitely going on. I was pissed to see the few rock features in the pine sections pulled out. Funny thing is, the next week I came and someone had put the boulders back on one of the sections, albeit all loosey goosey like.

Is there an advocacy group that looks after the trails here? There's been some awesome new trail added in the last couple years but I haven't a clue who's doing it. This is really a gem of a ride destination, and I'd hate to see it closed off, or buffed out for liability reasons.

I ride here 2-3 times a week and would love to help out.

Aside from that, I was out a couple days ago, and the trails are primo.

No advocacy group. GRCA owns the land. There was going to be the Puslinch Tract Recreation Association (PTRA) but that quickly fell apart :cryin:.

The only official trail, maintained by the GRCA, is the figure eight double track.

Everything else was/is done by the community of trail users (bikers, hikers, horseback riders, xc-skiers, joggers, dog walkers, etc).
