Nice evening for a ride on rest day.

Mosquitoes still bad on the ridge but less buggy closer to the river. Deet required
Snapped a few pics on the way back

Fun ride in Dufferin Forest on Sunday! We bumped into other local riders, equestrians and mushroom pickers... all were friendly and happy sharing the trails.

Singlesprocket and I did a long exploratory ride. We found some old overgrown trails and had a blast

I love the vivaciousness of the forest and trails... fall riding makes me smile

Today we explored "the other side of Bolton". After a good morning run and kettlebell workout, we rode to north hill. Cool and sunny; trails were tacky in the sunshine and hard and dry in the shade.

Today's Winter Solstice ride was local. Temps around 0c. Trails are fun and challenging. We don't get as much the foot traffic as in the west end of Humber trails.

We met and chatted with a local photographer out with his puppy in the Nashville tract and taking pics of the beautiful scenery and wildlife

Tested my winter ride set up: wider rims and studded tires for grip on the icy

nooo, don't need snow. not enough packing down in the tract. actually the fatty works pretty good in the conditions now. it's a good bush whacking bike. got lots of traction to ride over pretty stupid stuff. i did have to bump up the tire pressure a bit to stop getting pinch flats and for the road sections riding from the house. will probably get a suspension fork for the bike, jumping/drops (even small hits) is a bit jarring.

time to stud up because it is icing up. finally we are getting some decent low temps -14c. the river is icing nicely, it shouldn't to long. the ox-bow's are thick enough though.

2hrs, i used 16o studs to do both wheels. i tested it on the ice and it gave me enough traction.

Unique, exciting ride today. We rode the Lake Ontario shore ice. Temp was -7c but windchill was -22c. Rode for 2 bone chilling hours but it was worth the thrill. Riding was challenging and diverse. Some soft sand, frozen smooth rocks, off camber chunky and glassy ice! Mix in steep grassy hills at the Waterworks and that makes ice biking incredible... thank you studded tires

Another icebike ride today on the Humber River West in Clairville. Conditions were aces. Temp was mild and ice surface was very different in comparison to yesterday's ride on Humber north tributary. Wetter and slicker but no open spots.

River passed the inspection. The verdict was solid

We didn't have to ride much distance to get a good workout. Our ride last Sunday in Clairville was about 16km.... however it was technical in areas

When you're out ice biking, do you fall over much? I've never done it. I don't have studded tires. Just curious...

If there is a bit of snow on top of the ice, you will have a bit more traction with regular tires.

With glare ice, it's a crap shoot. Wear pads if possible because you will go down

    whew...

a little bit of advice about a hand saw that can fit in your pack...

Itís never to late to do trail maintenance as they sayÖ A fat bike just motivates me to do it in the winter. Well thatís not exactly true, I would do it on any bike. I like the winter to lay out alignments because you can really see the topography of the area where you have to work. The lack of foliage and the snow knocking down the weeds gives you a perspective you just donít have the warmer months. You can also see drainage problem areas with the formation of ice on the grounds surface. In really bad areas it looks like a mini glacier. Other then my flagging tape I picked up a basic tool to carry in my pack. Itís the Silky Gomboy folding saw. A slim light weight piece of kit that fits in the pack without taking up to much room. I tested the saw on a big maple blocking the trailn that was knocked down during the last icestorm. Most of the branches I had to cut through ranged from 2″ to 10″ in diameter. Cutting slightly green maple hardwood that is frozen can be a bit of a chore even with a chainsaw. The Gomboy went through it fairly well for a handsaw. It took a bit of practice to find the right amount of pressure to apply. Since the Gomboy blade is very thin you have to be careful not to bend it during your draws and pulls. It is also important to be aware of the limbs tension and compression as this will bind the saw. Cut accordingly, though I will be carrying some small plastic wedges that I have made to prevent this. Lastly always be aware of what you are cutting. Logs can shift and crush you, branches can drop and impale you. I must say that the Gomboy is a handy price of kit to have in your pack if you do any trail work.

Awesome weekend riding. Saturday in Clairville and Sunday in Bolton

The Humber West was combination of glare ice, thin crunchy snow, and drifting snow. This made riding slow.

I guess I'm getting old! I fell the other day hiking the Bruce Trail...tried to step around the ice that was showing, only to be caught unaware that the fresh snow I stepped onto was a sheet of ice underneath, and I went down on my arm/shoulder. I was able to ride the day after, but it was a wee bit painful.

Conditions around the banana belt were perfect this weekend BCD. Rode two different trail systems and both were perfect. Nice and fast and with decent temps. No jacket required for yesterdays ride.

So much snow melted since last ride and the ground is still frozen so trails were still firm.

Our highlights: 1) Spotting a large coyote running through the woods but couldn't snap a pic in time. 2) Crowsnest. 3) Finding a huge ice pond to play on! 4) Another fun filled day riding

    Trails were dry.

Spotted the coyote running through this forested area after this pic was taken. It was quite large and it's silhouette resembled like a german sheppard ...so we suspect it might be a coywolf

A walk with David Miller up the Humber River Valley | Toronto Star

A nice scenic route to ride when the trails are too spongy and wet.

Fun ride and get together in the Don. Trails were dry and hard. In our group 20 riders (12 HT! and 8 FS bikes) and one dog met up. Trails were dry and hard

Awesome pics. Looks like a cool place to ride. How does the Mayor like rock?

Thank you Mikhs! I was pleasantly surprised ...thrilled actually at how good The Mayor was on the Rocks!!! I was expecting something akin to my old Pugs, with lots of self-steer on the off-camber riding. Nope...Mayor easily went exactly where I pointed it, just like any mountain bike! The riding position, stem length, and bar width are spot on for me. I attribute the self-steer on the Pugs to the weight of the Large Marge rims. The 5" Bud & Lou tires soak up a lot of harshness of the rock riding in comparison to the 4" tires that were on the Pugs, all the while being inflated firmer and therefore rolling just as well or better. The bike is also 5 lb lighter than the Pugs was. Too bad I have added 5 lb to my own weight in recent years lol! Traction of course is 100% and boggy wet water holes...pffft!!
