Kelso and Hilton Falls officially open for 2013

Kelso and Hilton Falls are now open to mountain bikers.

    Conservation Halton Trail Conditions

Hit the trails yesterday and they were great! Dry, though tacky in some places.

Awesome! Been itching to ride Kelso for a while now as I have not been there in 2 seasons.

Was there on Saturday, a few branches and downed trees that they still needed to clean up, but everything up top was dry and very much rideable. There was still some snow melting on the face and blocking part of the gravel fireroad, but overall great shape.

Did anybody check out the DH runs?
We were thinking of heading up on Saturday (90min drive) with the big bikes to session the line from rock-drop on down, playing mostly on the hip, on-hill booter and the corner drop....

Are they in good shape, or should we just hit Trashmore until things get a bit of love?

Is the gravel fireroad up the East side clear now ?
Last season , construction at the bottom blocked it .

It's not blocked at the bottom, but unless the snow melts very quickly, you'll have have to bypass the last 400m or so and hike up the grass (it was too slippery to ride) to get right to the top. I was there yesterday afternoon and the snow is still pretty deep right in that spot.
A bad day on the bike is better than a good day doing anything else...

When I was there last Sunday, I went down one of the DH runs. It seemed like it had not gotten much action yet this season, it was still sort of leaf covered.
When under pressure, your level of performance will sink to your level of preparation.

I spent the day riding at Kelso yesterday. Trails are in A1 shape with the exception of Rouge Trail and Lac Trail which have lots of small debris on them but are still totally rideable. No mud or wet stuff until your at the bottom of the ski hill. Still a few sizable patches of snow on the hill. Lots of people there yesterday too, the summit lot was a busy place.

For parking, go to the Summit Gatehouse off Steeles Avenue. It's quicker during busy hours on the weekend and is a better place to start a ride IMHO. If you aren't familiar with the trails at Kelso, make sure you grab a trail map at the gatehouse.

Here are a few of my favourite trails at Kelso:
    • Extreme Trail- Expert level trail with lots of roots, rocks and some structures
    • Rough Trade- Fairly advanced trail with lots of twists and turns
    • Wizard's Way- Fast and flowy
    • Quarry Trail- Another fast and flowy trail
    • Snakes & Ladders- Lot's of fun, but not for everyone

There is also a course setup for the Tuesday night race series, you can find the start at the bottom of the ski hill in front of the Sunset Lodge. A route map is available here. The trail is fairly well marked with signs so you shouldn't have too much trouble following it. Check it out and compare your lap time to the results of last week's race results (May 21 under "Events". Novice = 1 lap, Sport = 2, Expert = 3)

    Enjoy!

not this weekend but I was there last Sunday. Trails in great shape overall, some branches and debris in isolated places from the ice storm, but overall pretty good. New check in booth at summit, renewed my membership and they had cards printed and ready right on the spot, no mailing required, and they've dispensed with the daily stickers.
    I'm there again tomorrow am.

Probably not news for most but I drove by today and the gate is closed. I'm starting to admit summer is almost over.

I was there last week. decent conditions. sign says trails are closed, summit lot is closed, called they did not say trails are closed for riding. there are downed trees on the trail that appear to be placed on the trail. came across 5 other riders on the trail.

kelso open or closed? thats up to you
no staff stopped me at any time during my 2 hour visit

oh yes you have to climb ascension to access trails if you park legally
