    Help me choose a chainring!

Ditching my horrible 3x10 for a wolftooth single ring. I am in my middle ring 99% of the time. Some of the ocups I have had to granny but that was due to me being completly dead.

At sir sams I rode middle ring the whole time except the last lap tech climb into the muddy rocks.

Current ring is a 33tooth. Im not sure If I want to do a 34 a 32 or even a 30tooth. Riding my home town hills a 34 would keep some speed for the flats but with duntroon and horse shoe coming a 32 or lower might be smart.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Why not just swap out the front ring as needed for different courses?

My brother rides 1x9 with a 34T ring with no issues in the trails surrounding Horseshoe.

Also, a few questions about your set up:
    1. Are you using a chain guide?
    2. Does your rear mech have a clutch?
    3. What ratio are you using on your cogset?

    Good points. forgot to add.

11-36 casset on a 29er. I will get other rings as money permits (not much budget this year....or ever) Just trying to get the "one ring to do most" No clutch right now. The wolftooth has the same profile as the xx1 and in other threads has been very good at not droping chains with or without clutch type. I will not be using a chain guide.

My 34 tooth will be fine for almost all my riding. just the 3rd lap on a hilly course might put me into the cramp zone .

I am leaning towards a 32tooth as the do most. Not to often I max out the 11tooth on the cog as my trails are pretty rough.

    thanks for the reply

Go for a 30 fanger, if you can find it...Yer knees won't forget...You can always scratch out the 30T and Sharpie-in a "34T" to scare all the toughies.....Every (older) single-speeder/single -ringer regrets not going lower on the Primary Ratio...

second the 30t, I never ride in 11t, I just stand and cost
32 -- 19 on my 29er single speed works great for me. But im fat and lazy

with the 30 you will be in a more efficient chain line when you need it on some steeper shorter climbs.

Probably a good idea. They will have 24 and 26 tooth ready in late july if even needed, but I am going to just tough it out. It can only get easier right?

    Help me choose a chainring!

Raceface also have a new chainring design for chain retention purpose, the Narrow-Wide ring, pretty similar design as others, but compatible across 9/10/11 speed chain widths, in a sturdy sexy alu CNC package with bunch of nice anodized colors. Canadian made and RaceFace stuff is usually my go-to for not breaking the bank nor the components.

    Plus they are already available

Was looking at those, but i want the wolf tooth because it will work spiderless. Saves about 150 grams on my x9 crank.

    Wolftooth or race face?

If wolftooth, did you get the direct mount or BCD?

Just got a couple MRP Bling Rings, not stepped but SRAM direct mount. Yet to install them but they look pretty beefy, tall and wide teeth.

As much as I want to try X_1 to see if their "you don't need a guide" claims pan out, I really feel like the smart thing to do is still run a chainguide. Even if it is as good as they say a top only guide is cheap (and light) insurance.
