Just wanted to let you all know that there is a new event on the cycling calendar this year...The Garden City Classic

The race takes place on the streets and trails of St. Catharines. If you have never had a chance to ride down here I'll let you know that they are a great mix of speed, short punchy climbs and technical bits.

Details, course map and registration available online at Garden City Classic - Home

    Date: September 15
    Location: Brock University
    Cost: $35

Our goal for the event is to include all of the cornerstone requirements of the traditional mountain bike race; cheap entry fee, challenging course with plenty of single track, great post race food and drink, sweet prizes and swag.

Hey, will the course be more or less like the Squeezer(RIP)?

It will be less like the Squeezer(RIP).

It will feature many of the same trails but the two road climbs are not in the race nor is the section through the grape field. The large road climb is replaced by a long gravel/dirt double track climb.

Overall it has more singletrack than the Squeezer and I believe (as do others) that it is an overall tougher course.

The Squeezer organizer (Liberty Bicycles) is really on board and have been helping me out tremendously. They are great people.

Thanks for your interest. Hope to see you on race day.

Sounds fun. Never ridden the trails down there.

From what I have seen of the course, this one is more geared toward the MTB racer than the citizen event crowd.

While you will not find a spattering of gnarly technical obstacles, there is a lot of singletrack, and a lot of climbing.

I've been so far removed from the MTB race scene lately, but I think I might just have to register for this one.

There's just a few days left before the registration fee gets bumped up from the current deal of only $35.

I'll be there, and I'd love to see this race well attended.

Looks like this wouldn't be bad as a first race - thinking seriously about it.
I normally ride 1X9 but don't consider myself that strong of a rider. Anyone that knows the course, would a granny be a good idea?

It mostly depends on your ability.

I have a traditional 3x9 drivetrain on my 26er, and don't shift into the granny for climbing any of the hills.

Some riders do just fine on a singlespeed, no walking needed.

my buds signed up but I am off to Cancun tomorrow returning next sunday after the race.
Last year I missed the Dundas monstercross because I was away as well. I wish that I had better timing for my trips away.
I hope it is successful, good weather and a good course. Good luck to all.

So this looks like a great race and I'm planning to enter (think I just missed $35 cut off) - hopefully Tees are still available

I recognize most of the route from previous squeezers and L2L's

Hoping to pre-ride this week. Just need some help with map
ROUTE - is it up the Hydro Hill?
Then left through woods past pub - back in woods down hill cross road onto 12 mile creek trails??

There will be a few extra Tees but not too many. Sorry but I had to place the order so they are done on time.

The route is up Hydro, stay right and follow the fenceline until you come back to the gravel road. Then go straight through the trees and beside the soccer field. Then drop down to the escarpment trails behind the ropes course.

Fully understand about the tees - hope I can snare one

After going down the hill and heading toward Glenridge do you take the Marv trails then back along the river to Glenridge then cross river?

Heres the course map. Its all the singletrack going counterclockwise. Take the new gravel trail up the escarpment.

    This race was really fun.

It was by far the best race I've done all year. Ok, to be fair, this is the only race I did this year, other than a Wednesday night local series.

Anyway, even though this was an inaugural event, it all seemed to go smoothly from my perspective. I was happy to see a pretty good turnout of racers and volunteers.

The race course was very fun. Tons of singletrack, just the way it should be. There were some good climbs to test the legs, and enough bumps to keep you awake.

And of course, I have to say that this race was a fantastic value. Shirt, check. Fun racing, check. Delicious roast beef sandwich at the finish, check. Prizes, check.

A big thank you goes out to all that made this event possible.
