Listen! The Frostbike ~ Winter Mountain Bike Race v2014

    2014 RACE REGISTRATION OPENS NOVEMBER 16, 2013

    Details | thefrostbike.com

    What is it?
It's a winter mountain bike race of pure awesomeness.

    When is it?
    February 16, 2014

    Where is it?
    Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada

    What is Sportsfest?
It's a Winter Festival held in Port Colborne during February.

What does it cost to enter this race?
    $40.00 per entry.

Where does the money raised go?
The money generated from this race goes back into the ShortHills Cycling Club trail building and advocacy fund.

    Where do I register?
    You can register HERE

    How many entries are allowed?
The race is capped at 100 entries only. The 2013 Frostbike sold out a month before the race so enter early to get your spot.

Can I get a refund on my registration?
Sorry but we can not offer refunds on race entries, your money does go back into the trails and is greatly appreciated.

    When does race registration close?
Registration closes @ noon February 14, 2014 or once it reaches 100 entries which ever comes first. No day of registration... sorry.

Where do I go on race day?
You need to sign in and pick up your registration package and plate at the CITY TAVERN, 202 Main Street West, Port Colborne, ON. The CITY TAVERN is right across the street from where the Frostbike start will be.

Where do I park my car?
Lots of parking at the CITY TAVERN and at the several municipal parking lots along Main Street West. Look for the Green "P" signs.

    What are the Race Categories?
There will be Gender and Age Group Categories along with a FATBIKE specific category as well.

    When should I be there?
Registration check in starts at 8:30am and will close at 10:30am. First wave will start at 11:00am.

    What Trails are used?
The Robin Hood lands known locally as "The Hood". It is an area filled with the spoils from digging the Welland Canal many years ago.

What is the race course like?
Laps are approximately 10km in length and final course route will depend on the weather conditions leading up to race day. There will be rocks, logs, trees, hills (small but punchy) snow, ice, mud, wooden bridges, cougars (maybe) and the odd snowman if there is enough snow.

So how does the start work?
You will start in a modified time trial/mini waves format of up to 6 riders at a time. These mini-waves are self-seating. Get to the start line with 5 friends or race with the people around you. There is a two lap option and your "best time" from one of those two laps will stand as your final result. It will be computer timed.

So what kind of bike should I ride?
A mountain bike would be best. We have seen all types of mountain bikes at this race ranging from Fatbikes to full on XC race rigs to single speed rigid bikes, winter beater hard tails, full suspensions to downhill bikes and even a 2 wheel drive Christini mountain bike. As for cross bikes... take your chances but be warned skinny tires are probably not the best choice for The Hood.

    What tires should I use?
Your tire selection will depend on conditions on race day. Most use a heavy knobby type tire or winter ice spiked tires, there could be snow, mud and or ice.

Where do I go when I'm done racing?
Done your lap(s) head on over to the CITY TAVERN for our post race festivities. A food will be served to each race participant redeeming a food token. Various types of beverages will be available for purchase. Awards will follow the race conclusion at approximately 2:30pm.

I need to make sure the weekend is free (Typically do a ski trip around that time) and if I'm free I want to try this race for sure.
Seems like a lot of fun

    Registered Saturday.

Had tentatively scheduled a fun winter snowshoeing adventure into that weekend, but pushed it back a week so I could make it.

Let it snow! (I'm serious about that, I wanna fatbike!)

I feel the same way. I absolutely love this bike, but I fear it mocks me whenever I'm not around. I can't wait to ride it on dirt as well. I think it's going to be an awesome trail bike.

Less than 2 weeks to go and we have got our smackdown set up.... Four local riders so no home trail advantage. We've got Wade on his fatbike- big advantage if the snow is deep. Dan on a regular mountain bike- a speedster with great skills but hasn't been riding all winter. Andrew and I round it out and we plan on playing dirty! Texas Shoehorns to Wade and Dan out of the starting gate and then Andrew and I will split the beer winnings.

The real smack down is happening between Misconceptionz and I. He's borrowing my old Misfit for the Singlespeed Smackdown. It's anyone's game but if he beats me I intend to use the fact he is 15 years younger than me as an excuse

Over 25 entered in the fatbike category with 5 of those being female. Also about a dozen signed up for the Singlespeed category and it's a sausagefest.

I don't know, I rode some of the parts that have been shoveled out last night and it has firmed up nicely. Got some good speed on my "skinny spikey" tires.

I imagine there will be real mix of trail conditions from hard pack to loose snow.

It's actually up to 13 now. We had someone back out due to injury and the person on the standby list is running singlespeed.

This is up for grabs as prize for an informal head to head weighted GT sled drag race. Look for the action at the start line pre-race.

Louda spanked everyone's ass hard. I didn't look super careful at the results, but she was close (if not) the fastest 'regular' tired bike (and singlespeed too).

It was a great day out there. As usual, huge props to SHCC and all their volunteers, they put on super fun events.

Fatbikes were definitely an advantage out there, though if you got out in the first few waves on a skinny tired bike, I think you could have laid down some pretty good times.

The course was the 'funnest' in the three years (I think there has only been three years).

By the time I went out for my second lap, the course was churned up. Much more difficult, but it was still fun to be out riding.

Edit; Broadwayline's bike is redonculous. Seriously redonculous.

The 5th Frostbike (yes number 5) was the snowy'ish conditions we have had to date. A lot of shoveling went into prepping the course for todays race.
    Hopefully everyone enjoyed the race.

Louda, you kicked some serious ass today, well done!

Super fun race boys! Had a blast - good to meet you guys / see Unglued with gears / CapSydor congrats on that podium spot! Badass man!

I started in one of the last waves on my first lap so I could be with my buddies which turned out not to be a good idea speed wise but was worth it fun wise!

Also those VeeTire Snowshoes are coming off ASAP in favour of something with some grip - Capt what were you running tire wise?

Race organization was unreal this year - Frostbike keeps getting better and better!

I'm running Surly Nates. From the information I'm gathering, most fatbikers find this to be the best traction tire out there, and though I've never tried any others, I can't imagine otherwise. The Nates are like tractor tires. They roll like crap (especially if you are running <5 psi for really soft conditions), but they will climb you up a vertical wall if you got the legs to do it.

The 45nrth HuskerDu looks pretty good. I hear a lot of people run a Bud/Lou combo as well (if you can go 4.8).

your tires seem to be pretty capable, based on their thread. you may have been running them too hard. the difference of only a couple of psi - can make tires awesome or terrible.... plus they are wider than most tires out there...

Have played with them from 3psi-11psi - theres a big thread on MTBR about grip issues in snow / being super undersized going to run them as summer fatty tires, I think they will hookup awesome on hardpack!

Lamere is hooking up some Bud/Lou to try out so I'll report back with results this week!

    Still stoked on Frostbike!!

    Undersized at 4.8"?

Having heavy tires on a superlight bike is kinda tough - but hey what do i know. I would probably go with Dillingers instead then.

Undersized indeed! Mine only measured 3.78inch tread to tread on 65mm rims

Well I got the Bud/Lou on and did 28k at Guelph Lake - holy smokes what a difference! Traction is amazing and the ability to rock on non-hardpack powder / muck is awesome! Made the bike super fun on snow

Im serious as cancer when I say at 4psi front 5psi rear they roll better than the snowshoes did at 7psi f/r on pavement which I was super impressed with - at 4psi the snowshoes were like pedaling in glue and have heavy self steer - assuming the snowshoes would roll better at 10+psi but they are pretty useless traction wise that hard on snow (going to use them in summer)

    STOKED!
