I'm there. Great early January training goals, for beer!

While I didn't win my six pack slam down (which I proudly exclaim was my creation), I still drank a fair share of the winnings (thanks Craig!). This makes it a win, win situation. Win, you get bragging rights, lose, you drown your sorrow in yours, and all other six packs!

I love that the video focused in on the the beer we left trail side. Can't argue it wasn't cold when we finished and (discretely) dug in.

Studs are fair game. Depending on the trail conditions they may not be an advantage. They can be slippery on bare rocks. But they do sound like sizzling bacon on the paved trail... mmmmm bacon

mmmm... the 19th like I posted.
The race video in the posting is from the 2011 race which was held on the 20th.

It is the Sunday on the long weekend in February to coincide with Port Colborne's Winter Sportsfest.

What is this Six Pack Smackdown I keep reading about. It sounds interesting, but I can come up with about 8 different things it could be. A little clarity would help so I can start training for it early.

The race is run in waves of 4 to 6 riders. So what you get is like having a mini race within the race. CyptSydor came up with the brilliant idea of wagering beer on the deal. So.... challenge 3 or 4 of your riding buddies to a 6 pack smackdown. Each of you puts a six pack in the snow bank and whoever wins your waves wins all the beer!

    Training early is very important.

Thank you for explaining this for me. I knew there were waves of riders, I had a notion that each group does 2 laps (which I could just be making up). So I was imagining that the Six Pack Smackdown was that everyone had to drink a six pack between laps. Being a Guinness drinker, I was a little intimidated by this but figured I would take up the challenge by starting training for this now.

Of course, now that I understand the Smackdown is not like that, perhaps I will practice anyways.....you know, just in case.

    Just about a month away.

    Who's registered?

Who's still feeling the effects of the holidays?

    Who has a working bike?

Who is going to start throwing down some six pack slam down trash talk?

    I'm in.

    Holiday's are over?

I'll just use it as a run bike... no big deal.

I may not win Six Pack Smackdowns, but If I do, I'll have a DD standing by.

I'm still working on a working MTB. I've had a major swingers party between three bikes.

Depending on the snow, a run bike might be the best!

And, standard protocol is to share the bounty, so maybe bring that DD regardless.

Thanks for the reminder, I'll register tonight. I think pretty much all the Holiday weight gain is now history. It should be once again a painfull reminder of mid-winter shape followed by an over consumption of Port Colborne Premium (OV).

What are the criteria for the smackdown?

See you all there, it will be fun!

You can just put out a smackdown challenge with whatever criteria you want. Last year I put out a smackdown challenge for a Yedi Class. Minimum of 215 lbs because that is my weight. I also put in a clause that YOU couldn't be in my smackdown 'cause you're too damn fast. You are way too skinny now to be in a Yedi class anyway.

No, a different venue (just across the street from the starting area, not crossing the bridge, down the road)

From recollection, I had a Rickards at the Canal Days race this summer, but I am sure they have OV and fiddy for your enjoyment.

I'm down for that wager and yes, starting earlier this year would be good.

I have seen Hustler on his fatbike. He's pretty fast. I am still planning on smacking down with y'all. I am just deciding whether to do the clydesdale smackdown or join your guys' lap.

Still some questions on the race.
    So here you go.

    What is it?
It's a winter mountain bike race of pure awesomeness.

    When is it?
    February 19, 2012

    Where is it?
    Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada

Where does the money raised go?
The money generated from this race goes back into the ShortHills Cycling Club trail building and advocacy fund.

    Where do I register?
The Frostbike Winter Mountain Bike Race

    How many entries are allowed?
The race is capped at 100 entries only.

    When does race registration close?
Registration closes @ noon February 17, 2012 or once it reaches 100 entries which ever comes first. No day of registration... sorry.

Where do I go on race day?
You need to sign in and pick up your registration package and plate at the CITY TAVERN, 202 Main Street West, Port Colborne, ON. The CITY TAVERN is right across the street from where the Frostbike start will be.

Where do I park my car?
Lots of parking at the CITY TAVERN and at the several municipal parking lots along Main Street West. Look for the Green "P" signs.

    When should I be there?
Registration check in starts at 8:30am and will close at 10:30am.
First wave will start at 11:00am.

    What Trails are used?
The Robin Hood lands known locally as "The Hood". It is an area filled with the spoils from digging the Welland Canal many years ago.

What is the race course like?
Laps are approximately 10km in length and final course route will depend on the weather conditions leading up to race day. There will be rocks, logs, trees, hills (small but punchy) snow, ice, mud, wooden bridges, cougars (maybe) and the odd snowman if there is enough snow.

So how does the start work?
You will start in a modified time trial/mini waves format of up to 6 riders at a time. These mini-waves are self-seating. Get to the start line with 5 friends or race with the people around you. There is a two lap option and your "best time" from one of those two laps will stand as your final result. It will be computer timed.

What's this Six Pack Smackdown that I've heard about?
It is Officially not part of the race.
    Learn more about it here.
    http://forums.mtbr.com/eastern-canad...-a-742831.html

So what kind of bike should I ride?
A mountain bike would be best. We have seen all types of mountain bikes at this race ranging from Fatbikes to full on XC race rigs to single speed rigid bikes, winter beater hard tails, full suspensions to downhill bikes and even a 2 wheel drive Christini mountain bike. As for cross bikes... take your chances but be warned skinny tires are probably not the best choice for The Hood.

    What tires should I use?
Your tire selection will depend on conditions on race day. Most use a heavy knobby type tire or spiked tires but the winner from the last two years running used Schwalbe Rocket Ronís... yes he did fall a few times.

Where do I go when I'm done racing?
Done your lap(s) head on over to the CITY TAVERN for our post race festivities. A bowl of chili will be served to each race participant. Various types of beverages will be available for purchase.
Awards will follow the race conclusion at approximately 2:30pm.

Bring it on, but don't be surprised if your flat isn't random bad luck this time

When does the registration close? I'd like to give this race a try, but might not be able to make it work until closer to the event.

I'm somewhat interested doing this. How's the course anyway? Will my 34x17 single speed going to be ok? (meaning no crazy climbs)

34:17 will be perfect for the race. That's the ratio I run on those trails. There are no big climbs on the course. The challenge here is more about bike handling.

Forgot to mention it's a 29er. I could probably throw 19 in the back but I really don't want to mess with the chain. But if it's generally flat, I think it might be ok. Thanks.

Flat? Not so much. Lots of steep but no long climbs. I like the term "rolling terrain" for the Hood. Tight & twisty. I don't ride a SS but I don't change gears when I ride the Hood. There's no time.

Looks like I'm going to miss my first chance at this race. I'll be in the hospital. Maybe next year.

I've been running a 32 x 18 on my Niner Air9 and that's just about perfect for The Hood.
As others have already said the terrain is far from being flat.

OK, We have at least a 2-4 worth of beer on the line (not counting ballast). Jamie wrote:Ok We've got a smackdown.....

We've got 14 stone, Wade, Morgan and Me!

If anyone else is interested, you can do waves of up to 6 people. But at this time you would have to declare your beer intentions and we will vote on whether to accept or not.

Is anyone else having trouble registering?
whats with all the registration problems/delays lately (The Frostbike, PtoA, Summer Solstice)?

If i can get registered, I will be riding my fatbike on raceday with the BIG HEAVY tires on.For Sure! Snow or no Snow ( my new frame is still getting made) . Looks like with the weather we have been having it will be the latter. So i hope you like a delicious sampler from Mill Street. Who else is in for the smackdown?

Any chance the race has reached capacity?

I had no problems registering, and it's clear others have registered without issue.

oh dear... i just got a cat call... haven't fully committed... ski patrolling the day before followed by the Icycle race, and no rear brake lever may have me thinking it's a game day decision... but if I'm getting challenged... I just loved going home (and sharing!) all that beer last year!

Issues some of the other races are having are related to the registration system the OCA now has.

The Frostbike registration is a stand alone system.

I just ran through a registration not 10 seconds ago... (so I guess I'm now registered to race!)
There wasn't any issue what-so-ever. I used my Paypal account to make payment.
You can pay via your Paypal account or through any major credit card as well by selecting that option.

    What problem(s) are you having?
    email me: contact@shorthillscyclingclub.com

Not to say this is your issue but the only problems we've had over the past 4 years with this system was related to peoples Paypal accounts or their credit card.

Well, we always try and one-up ourselves with the swag. It's also blue this year and I'm not sure if any race has handed these out before, I can't recall.

    In-door Start

We are working on getting an indoor start for the race. There is an "industrial" style garage that we might be able to use for the start of the race complete with woodstove and power.

Time to go beer shopping for the smackdown.

Weather appears to be setting up for a thaw/melt this week, then some cooler temps over night Saturday.

Could be exposed and icy, but nice temps (just below or at freezing)

Still need to pick up some beer.

Great ride last night! The Hood is 80% snow covered. Thanks to the large group out on Sunday the trails had a nice snow single track packed to ride on. Get off this into the 4-6" of crunchy snow and the riding was vey hard. With the amount of snow in the trees and the conditions and forecast It looks like there will still be lots of snow cover for the Frostbike on Sunday. Get yourself signed up and kick off the 2012 season with the most unique and fun race in the area.

Just reg'd... now just have to pull bike out of basement and make sure it is in somewhat working order...

Anyone know what trails are being used in the Hood? I'm going to try and ride out there tmrw AM (plan is on bike in Hood at 830) to get an idea as what to expect as this is my first frostbike!

Also, the Yeti beer donation- I got on scale this morning and it tipped in at 214.6 better top up tonight so I don't have to carry any additional weight Regardless sounds like a good way to meet some new biking peeps! I'll be sure to bring a 6pk of Mill St. LMK if there is room for a noobie to joint the Yeti smackdown

I'll be on a white KHS come find me so I can be sure to donate my beers to the right person

I need to spend Saturday putting a bike together! Comedy of small issues is leaving me with-out a current running bike.

For all those thinking of the Six-pack-slam-down, I'm sure the beer area will be well marked, or very apparent, just show up, even if you don't have a current smack down lined up. I'm sure some stuff will easily organized on the spot. It's all for fun, worst case, you bought an interesting six-pack!

Final decision on the course will be made tomorrow morning ( dependent on weather and trail conditions)and it will be marked by early afternoon. If all the trails are good to go we will use basically the same as the 2012 CDMBR. If not it will be modified to use more of the all weather trails. I think 14 Stone is out so there will be a spot for in the Yeti Class. Ask around for Jamie or Wade and we will get you set up at the weigh in.

Lap 2 same direction without Mud Lake.

We will be able to get you set up if you bring you application for the SHCC.

I just registered too. Wish there was more snow, but oh well.
I guess I'll have to unmount rear fender now.
Watch out for a slow, titanium, sorta single speed, with studded tires 29er.
