    E.C. Throwback Thursday

There was a funny pic from yesterday's news about a flash flood in the Beach ... We experienced a situation (although not so dramatic back in July 2012 ) coincidence?

    E.C. Throwback Thursday-j6vdvum.jpg

    For Throwback Thursday:

It was almost 4 years to the day that we were riding in the Don when we got caught in a heavy rain at the dj's... the Don River overflowed and starting pouring into the pump track! We had to boot it out quick!

In the first post , if you click on the 4th pic, it opens to a video

Today is the 62nd anniversary of Hurricane Hazel- October 15, 1954. This storm brought winds reaching 124 km an hour and at least 200 mm of rain falling every 48 hours.

    E.C. Throwback Thursday-i3t263z3.jpg

In its wake, 81 people were killed, 1,868 left homeless and a damage cost equal to $1 billion today. Entire houses built on flood plains were swept away, roads washed out, bridges gone.

But the hurricane also left a lasting fingerprint on Toronto, with city planners working to figure out why Hazel was so devastating to the city.

The need for green spaces which absorb water led planners to rethink development projects destined for floodplains. Marie Curtis Park now sits in the place of houses in the parkland at the south end of Etobicoke Creek.

Thirty-two houses were washed away on Raymore Dr., next to the Humber River in Weston. Parkland has since been added to the area, and the street size has been reduced.

The G. Ross Lord Dam, near Finch Ave. and Dufferin St. in the Don River watershed, and the Claireville Dam, near Hwy. 427 and Finch Ave, were both created to control flooding in the area.

About three years after Hurricane Hazel, four conservation authorities came together to form the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, designed to oversee watershed management and sustainability practices.

Out to the Islands on Tuesday. Missed an excellent sunset (waiting @ Ward's Island dock). Props on the boardwalk pic

I imagine the view for the air show is cool. A few years ago I watched the Ontario Place Canada Day fireworks from Hanlan's Point, great vantage point and no crowds. I wonder if we'll ever see that again? The old ship that they used is still anchored off the shore there.

    Bicycles during wartime

The Second Divisional Cyclists training in Toronto, 1915
    E.C. Throwback Thursday-f1244_it0793.jpg

The Second Divisional Cyclists was comprised of platoons from Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Kingston, Winnipeg and Vancouver. They were part of the Canadian Bicycle Corps, which fought at Ypres, Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. The Second Division assembled in Toronto under the command of a Colonel Denison.

The Canadian Bicycle Corps, mobile and unassuming on their bicycles, were mainly tasked with reconnaissance missions. However, they were still trained in combat and armed with Lewis guns.

During WWI, bicycles also played an important role on the homefront.

In the second decade of the 20th century, the automobile industry - booming in the early 1900's - now focused its resources on war efforts. Gasoline was rationed, so Canadians back home relied heavily on bicycles for transport.

In 1917, according to the Canadian War Museum approximately one in eight of the 300,000 factory workers producing materials for war were women. On a bicycle, a woman might ride to her job at the factory producing materials that a man, riding his bicycle on the front lines, would use.

The Canadian Bicycle Corps (and the actual bicycles that transported them) are a small, but important part of Canada's war history. Indeed, they were the first unit to cross the Rhine in late 1918.

We rode Lake Ontario shore ice which was a unique, and exciting ride . Temp was -7c but windchill was -22c. Rode for 2 bone chilling hours but it was worth the thrill. Riding was challenging and diverse. Some soft sand, frozen smooth rocks, off camber chunky and glassy ice! Mix in steep grassy hills at the Waterworks and that makes ice biking incredible… thank you studded tires

It was so cold on this ride, I wore my ski helmet and ski pants for extra warmth.

Ha! Since 2008, and every couple of years, a group of us take our bikes to the Toronto Airshow (Labor Day weekend). The best viewing is Hanlan's point on the Island. Plus, the "sunbathers" don't mind us watching the show

Cool pics! I noticed the 'love locks' last year when I rode to the Humber I wonder how long they'l last? I guess Paris officials recently removed them from the bridge over the Seine.

Where is the 'flying saucer'? I've ridden north to Lions Park & a bit further, but don't recall it.

    Thank you !

It's been a few years since we rode the path so I'm not sure if the flying sauce has been torn down. When this pic was take, the rest room was locked and there was garbage and broken glass around... but the cool part was there was an echo!

Just seeing these pics, I have an urge to go back. It's a great place to ride especially when the trails are wet

I checked Google Earth & it shows up on their view 2002 (update please!). The bike path goes right past it, so I must've missed/ignored it. I'll try to remember to check it out on my next trip to T.O.

Toronto, a city of bike builders
From old-time fave CCM to the bespoke quality of Cervelo

The first bike arrived in Toronto more than a century ago, and since then our sleepy little town has been wild for the spoke set.

But, we don’t just love to tool around on our city bikes sipping our lattes while shopping for moustache oil. We like to build ’em, too. In fact, we’ve been tinkering in the trade since 1895 when H. A. Lozier & Co. opened a shop in the Junction neighbourhood. The company eventually became part of CCM, a name that is still slapped onto bicycle frames.

That is just the tip of the carbon fibre iceberg. Currently, the city is home to numerous bicycle companies from the highest of high-end road bikes to swanky city bikes to a bona fide smart bike that could completely change the game in the near future.

Vanhawks is a small startup headquartered near Cabbagetown. The company entered the market with a sonic boom when its crowdfunding campaign set a record on Kickstarter, garnering $820,000 in startup funding for its first model.

The Valour is the world’s first smart commuter bike. It features Bluetooth connectivity, built-in front and rear safety lights, sensor integration and turn-by-turn smartphone navigation via a lighting system in the handlebars. But Vanhawks doesn’t just want a single-user system that offers routing data and navigation along with travel and nutritional metrics. Vanhawks is evolving its tech to start moving the system from a single-user to a multi-nodal system, essentially, a collective bicycle brain that will allow it to evolve and provide more and better information.

There is also Toronto’s Mariposa Bicycles, immortalized by artist Greg Curnoe and a long-time favourite amongst cycling purists. It was founded by Mike Barry and has now been taken over by his son, former professional bicycle racer Michael Barry.

And, of course, Cervelo. A bling bike ridden by Tour de France champions and weekend warriors alike with price tags that broke through the $10 K barrier years ago.

In addition, Toronto’s own Simcoe Bikes, named after the city’s founder, burst on the city biking scene with a stylish model designed specifically for commuting on our sloppy streets.
