Just so it is all clear. Last time I raced something of this distance involved a 2k run 90k bike and a 21k run. On the hottest July day around.

    No expectations...simple aim is...finish.

It will be. And the most important detail of the day is the fact I don't have to worry about driving standard home.

How not to train for 100k.

    3 hours of rock hauling.

One off road Can Am makes grabbing field stones so much easier.

Had a good discussion with a local kid at J&J yesterday about the 100k. He did it and says best strategy for anyone doing it is to take it easy on the first 40-50k through the Singletrack. He said first time he went to hard and beat himself up which caught up later. Took it easier the next time and had a better result.

Was in the LBS yesterday with my daughter and met Paul's mother. She was out handing PDE posters to hang up. She noticed I was wearing a PDE shirt and said "Hi" and thanks for riding.

I woulda never known but I was glad to meet her.

/random comment I know, back to my cave.

Right now I'm planning on riding it geared. I know I can ride it SS because I've done it but I will be able to ride more and push less (especially in the first 40k) with gears. Besides if I ride SS I have to attack everything which is less conducive to riding tandem with Chris. And unlike Chris, I do have to drive a car with a standard transmission home. If I live

Speaking from experience from the days when I did Ultra trail marathons. Driving after events like this really sucks when done immediately after. Because leg cramps...to the point of full lock on the 401 is highly entertaining.

Already noted the Starbuck's locations between Ganny and the Mother in Laws for the drive home after.

Let's see we so far have two 29ers and 26er Chromag set up Enduro style. All that is needed is some one to show up on a Fatbike for this....fully rigid of course.

I have no control over this. I find a strong correlation between drop bag and heat and work rate. I use a scale, the BSF (Bag Sag Factor), ranging from 1 to 10. Each number kinda representative of an inch of additional sac length.

It works with society and conversation too, for example:

Enduramil: "Ed, would you like to join Unglued and I on our ride?"

    Me: "No."

    Enduramil: "Why?"

Me: Unglued is into something called "training" and he may be a Type A"

    Enduramil: "So?"

ME: "Riding with people that train can lead to uncomfortable BSFs"

    Enduramil: "...but it"s exercise"

Me: "For my BSF to exceed 5 I must be getting paid"

    Enduramil: "Forc Hugh."

    1. Racing is like writing an exam. If you don't write any exams you never know where you stand.

    2. The problem with racing is it gets in the way of training.

About one out of every three of my friends/family members are on some form of antidepressant If I hadn't found cycling, I would probably have had to join them. I was thinking of asking my son if he would like to ride the 100km with me, in memory of a classmate of his who committed suicide two years ago at the age of 14 My daughters friend tried to commit suicide a few weeks ago. She is only 15 years old.
Hope I'll be able to join all of you out there. Nothing like an epic day in the saddle to support a great cause.

I have not been looking for donations on this site as I figure it is Enduramil's turf, but I have been working my network and am overwhelmed by the response. A lot of the people who have generously supported me have also shared with me how mental illness has impacted on their lives. I am now riding for all of them and am proud to do so.

What began is me supporting a friend has turned into the most important and personal ride I have ever done.

Since I've already hit up Enduramil's donation via his link, maybe you can PM me info on whatever you've set up?

Tee hee. I have to say though, for 100km, I would be wearing a camelback. And given my current fitness level, I'd also have a SPOT and 9-1 pre-dialed on a cellphone.

Funny you should mention lack of fitness. Just remembered this little bit of my racing history.

20 years ago did the Cheakamus Challenge...75 km. Spent all summer in Wainwright on infantry course and such. Came home and on a whim entered with only about 2 and a half weeks of bike time. Finished.

Problem. Crashed spectacularly at the Hydrocut this morning. Sprained left hand. Had to ride out one-handed. The next week will be spent clutching an icepack and guzzling advils like smarties. Must complete race...

Sadly Unglued has broken his wrist and is on the injured reserve list for a few weeks.

So it will be 14 Stone and me for the tour.

Kudos to the big guy for stepping up....

I feel sick to my stomach. This was going to be the ride of the season.

Tuff break. I was looking forward to learning 50 new words, roughly equivalent to pain, in the ride report. Unglued, I thought it was only me that took Advil like Smarties...Have you tried the sleepy time????

Problem with painkillers in North America is they are such insignificant doses one has to take at minimum 2-3 per dose for the desired effect. Paracetamol, now that stuff works.......

So bummed...first biking injury in 16 years that has sidelined me for more than a few days. And to think of all the great rides in the hopper for this fall...Paul's, Monstercross, Cot Sydors turkey ride, Singletrack challenge, the Anti-Race. Let's hope for a mild November cuz that's the next time I will likely be on the trails

I have the impression that the Monstercross will skip this year.

Turkey ride you say? Please tell me more...I need a excuse to not be around the mother in laws on the Sunday afternoon.

If it makes you feel any better, Barry, Enduramil is right. After much discussion, Mr. Monster and I decided that active toddler means no Monstercross.

As far as the Turkey Ride is concerned, I think Unglued was referring to Turkey Cross on Saturday, with its new venue in Christie Conservation Area. Wish we could be there - it looks fun and in our favourite venue!

Yup, Turkey Cross should be awesome! I'm really hoping they somehow manage to include some bermy singletrack. Wish you guys were in town that weekend.

So sorry about your finger Unglued. Quick healing!

And back to Paul's - good luck Enduramil and 14 Stone! We look forward to hearing how it goes.

Hard when the little ones's are at that age. Gets easier believe me as they get more mobile.

    Let us see,

    Bike ready
    Homebrew and cooler ready
    Baked eggs and bacon
    Duffle bag of clothing ready

    Hmm 2 issues left.

What flavour of Dorito's goes with Paul's?
What shall the pre race or last meal be....pizza or pasta and crab?

    Such difficult decisions.

40k of fail the best I can sum it up.

There is something else in the works in regards to this. But I will leave that to Unglued to reveal as it is his baby after all.

    Brief initial analysis....

Hope brake pads installed new $70
    Hope calliper potentially cracked $50-60
    Tube 5.99

Add in having to reorder new pads another $70 and more Dot 5.1 fluid $20

Lesson....running hydraulic disc's in Ganaraska was a stupid idea.

Tough race, thats for sure. My damage was $101 for new pads ( Shimano XT, the cool ice version). Of the 47 people who started the hundred, there were 6 who completed the whole hundred, a few (10 ish?) who got shut off the course just before the end (rolling trail closure because of the weather and the lack of speed due to that) and a whole bunch who had brake issues.
Actually, considering the weather, it was quite a pleasant day to be outside.
I think I met 14Stone before the race (Masher 6 ?). Nice to meet ya.
And Enduramil, that was probably the toughest ever first 40 km at Paul's. And the first 40 k is the hard part anyway. And at Paul's there is no fail or succeed, there are only those who step up to the line and those who don't.
    Cheers, Dave

I was the funny looking guy with the green Vassago and the blue Subaru who talked to you about solo 24s for a little while before the race.

Ahhh. It was alright, thought my ride ended at the 40km feed station much like many others. My brakes were shredded down pretty badly and the grinding coming from my drive train wasn't making me feel to hot about throwing another 60km into it knowing I had brought along the bare minimums to get me through 100km should something happen.

The original 40k took its toll on me mentally as well. Some of the puddles would splash you into a new grinding sound, or take your entire bike down into it. There were a few times I felt my bike was half submerged in the water. After a while of being forced to enter the puddles due to the trench style of singletrack we were riding, I really started to get my rage face on.

Though in not finishing it, I now have a beef with the 100km, which means that until its completed in its entirety, I know no other way to ride that event.

Hah... damp, understatement of the year my friend!

The cast comes off tomorrow. So I am cleared to ride again. Please don't tell the doctor I have been riding for the past 4 weeks....

I am considering rocking the Blizzard (see separate thread) for the last 15k loop. I hope someone talks me out of that.
