XTR Shadow Plus (M985) derailleur early failure...

Has anyone had issues with these new clutched rear derailleurs? My m985 failed on me today - the chain tension spring is completely shot and won't even hold the swingarm, let alone the chain tension. It only has probably 1300 miles on it and they are overall pretty easy miles considering Indiana trails. I am just curious if these clutched derailleurs are causing problems with this spring or if I just hit bad luck. Of course, I bought it somewhere online and I have no idea about a receipt, so I doubt Shimano is going to be helpful at all despite it being only a year or so old. I will probably just end up ordering another one, but maybe I will get the one without a clutch this time. :-\

Try contacting Shimano anyways. These derailleurs haven't been around forever, they are fairly new so they might be able to do you a favor.

I plan on it. I have an xt derailleur that I threw on for the time being.

The clutch system is designed only to engage when the cage swings forward, preventing chain slap, but it does not increase reward chain tension.

If it doesn't hold chain tension, then the main spring is broken. Just like any other type of RD.

Not sure about rebuildability, but the spring may have come out of its hole too...

XTR Shadow Plus (M985) derailleur early failure...

I had the tension spring break at one of the bends. Took the derailleur back to my LBS and Shimano warrantied it.

For what it is worth, Shimano dropped a new one in the mail today to replace mine with no hassle at all after I shipped mine in for inspection. Thanks guys!

    XT Shadow Clutch

Mine failed today as well with less 400 miles of use. When I took the cover off, the adjustment nut/bar fell out. It's a small piece of metal that cracked.

The good news is Shimano is replacing it no questions asked.
