XTR Shadow Plus Clutch and MRP G2SL

    Hi Guys,
I just installed my new Rear Derailleur Shimano XTR M986 Shadow Plus with Clutch and SRAM 1090 chain. My Rear cassette is 11-36 and front cog is 36T, I run 1x10. however when I had my LBS adjust the shifter, they told me that my chain is too short to use the MRP G2 chain guard. Chain is full length 114links uncut. I have attached picture with the chain on 36T rear and 36T front. Does it look like it is too short to use the chain guard?

Yes, I'd agree - too short.

I'm not convinced it is too short. There is a good article on PB - tech tuesday - about setting for the right chain length.

Basically, leaving the chain on both big rings, pass it through the lower roller of your guide, then you deflate your shock. Fully compress the rear suspension of your bike. A good chain length should bring the derailleur cage at a 45 degree angle or so.

If your chain is too short, it is probably not by much.

You will engage at least 6 more teeth on the chainring - since the chain is 1/2" pitch, that's 3 inches more chain - plus the extra required
for the longer run from guide to derailleur.
Only 2 solutions I can think of - sacrificing an piece of another chain and a second quick link - or find a bike store that
uses bulk chain and can cut the length you need.
I know my local LBS uses bulk 9 speed chain, not sure about 10 speed.

I will check the article on PB and see how much length i have after the let the air off from the rear shock . If not will run it without the G2 till I get new chain.

I had the exact problem I was/am running an xtr derailleur with a clutch but with a straitline silent guide. When I was on the large cog on the back with the clutch on there was tons of drag on the chain because it was too short and the clutch was pulling back on the chain. Not much of a fix but I ride now without the clutch on, with the chain guide there is not a lot is chain movement anyway.

I ran it thru the chain guard and did short 2miles ride. It felt fine, i was able to switch to the 36t without any issue. I will monitor for any weird noise and behavior.
