XTR Mega9 and an 8 speed bike?

On Mega9, (rd-m962) i've heard that the spacing inbetween nobs on the cog is different than a standard 8 speed derailleur since it needs to accomodate a 9 speed chain. Is this correct?

The spacing IS different on 9spd, as they've squeezed 9 cogs where 8 used to fit...
But, it's no problem to run 9spd rear derailleur on 6/7/8 spd setup, since all the different throw action is at the shifters, not the RD.
I guess the der. pulleys are a bit thinner on the 9spd, but it doesn't affect running 8spd chain.

    hope that answers it.
