    xtr crankset question

When using it with single ring should I get the 2 or 3 ring version of the fc-m980?

The triple with the cog mounted in the middle should theoretically give you the best chain line.
    Whats this line for?

980s are 980s, regardless of the number of chainrings.

The M980 2x crank simply runs different sized rings in the granny and middle position (and no big ring) compared to the 3x M980. If you're setting them up with a single ring the chainline will be the same regardless.

The 985 is a different crank, with a different chainline and BCD, being a dedicated 2x crank.
