Xtr 10 speed chain, broken connecting pins

Just tried to install a new xtr 10 speed chain, but both of the connector pins broke halfway in. Only 2 are included, is this the only safe way to join the chain?

Some have been using KMC links w/ XT, might be worth a try.

New Shimano XT chains and powerlinks?

KMC, SRAM, or Connex 10 speed connectors should all work...I prefer the KMC version myself

I am running the SRAM 10 speed power lock with a 10 speed Shimano chain no problem. I have heard the KMC is better - the only reason I haven't tried it is because the shop selling SRAM links is 400 meters away - the nearest shop selling KMC is 10 miles away....

How the hell are you breaking pins when installing them? Something tells me that you're doing it wrong.
May the air be filled with tires!

    Bummer!

    Two suggestions:
    1. Go to a bike store and have them show you the proper way to join a chain
    2. Buy and use a Shimano chain tool and get some extra pins at the shop in return for their time

    Best of luck.

Second. I've broken the pin in the chain tool several times but I've never broken a Shimano install pin.
