Xt cassette and chain "narrow" with regular chainset?

I'm looking at putting on a 9 speed xt rear cassette. I noticed that it requires a narrow chain because the 9 speed is the same width of a typical 8 speed. My question is..Can I use a 9 speed xt cassette and the narrow chain required for it with regular chainrings. My crankset is a truvative 5d 3x with factory chainrings.

    Shooter,

I think the short answer is yes. What you need to consider is the wear of the chainrings. A new chain will demolish well worn chain rings and cause severe chain suck on rings that are moderately worn. If near new, they will probably survive a new chain.

XT has an excellent life span, so it would be best if you could stretch your budget to the upgrading of the crankset. Perhaps SLX could be an acceptable compromise and will save you in the long run by extending the life of your new chain and cassette.

I saw this because I was about to start a slightly related thread that might throw up some useful info.

    Best of luck with it.

Ok. I think I'll order those soon. I just bought a new bike and the rear cassette is lacking in quality. It has 14 miles on it...the paint is almost worn off the middle chainring.

    Another question
Could I just put on xt chainrings? Shouldn't they just bolt on?

They may do if the bolt centre diameter is the same for all rings. Further to that I have heard that they made need filing slightly to stop the pattern of the rings overlapping the crank spider. I have no experience with your crankset, but hang in there and someone else will know.
