X7 shifter on 5 or 6 speed freewheel?

    Hey Guys,

I'm building an ebike for a guy who gave me his 29er for the transformation and he wants to keep his drivetrain the same.

He currently has X7 shifters with a 10 speed in the back which is about 40mm wide.
The motor is going to be a hub motor but it can accept a freewheel which is no wider than 31mm (is that 5 or 6 speeds by the width?).

Is there a way to limit the shifter to a 5 or 6 speed freewheel so he will be able to use the same awesome X7 shifter?

I run a 6-cog short stack with an 8-speed shifter. The stop screw prevents the chain from going too far toward the inside even though there are extra clicks of the shifter available.

Not sure if that actually helps or will work for you...

From what I was told the problem is the spacing between the cogs since 8-9-10 speeds are very narrow and the shifter moves in smaller increments that the wider spacing of 5-6-7 speed cassettes.

Actually not. 7 and 8 speed are the same still.

But the x7 system on 10 speed isn't going to happen.

A 5-6 speed freewheel is a hell no, not going to work.

If that hub can't support a cassette he is out of luck cause not going to work.

I guess I will order a hub motor with a freehub and get this over with...
Toss out 3 or 4 cogs, limit the shifter and keep the whole system the same with a few cogs less.
