WIll new XTR rear derailleur with old Deore shifter work?

I bought a new shimano XTR Rear derailleur- M970-SGS to replace my old one, but the new derailleur is made in the rapid fire plus era but I have not changed my old Deore shifters which are no rapid fire plus. Is this ok? I figure that as long as the cable is moving the same it doesnt matter if its rapid fire or rapid fire plus. Will they work together?

    Thanks!

You won't experience as smooth shifting with deore shifters. The xtr's use bearings in the shifters, whereas the deore's use plastic bushings. Replacing shifters with better ones (XT, XTR) is the best way to go to get the full potential out of it.
