Will my old XT M739 rear derailleur work with my new stuff?

Trashed my new (and expensive) XTR RD yesterday. I have on old 8 speed XT M739 RD. Might I be able to use it with my 07 XTR triggers and 34t cassette? I'm remembering that the largest cogs might make this setup impossible. Has anyone actually tried something like this?

The backup plan (while waiting for a new RD) is to scavenge the newer XT RD off my commuter and try to put the old M739 on the commuter, on which I never use the inner 3 cogs anyway.

It'll work fine if it's a long-cage model (SGS). The medium-cage will have issues.

Threw the derailleur on last night and indeed it does work fine, other than being stiff and ten years old. Here's one place where Shimano hasn't screwed us.

All Shimano rear derailleurs (except for the early Dura-Ace RDs) have the same shift ratio so you can even mount a road rear derailleur on there and it will work just fine. Front derailleurs, however, do not have this compatibility.
