Will an Acera work with a 9 speed?

I'm bringing an old bike back to life and need to know if the acera rear derailluer will work with a 9 speed cassette? Most sources I have found say it is a 7/8 speed derailluer.

Yep! Most Shimano stuff from 9spd and earlier is all compatible.

Some people even prefer to run 8spd front derailleurs for less chain rub on 9spd drivetrains (albeit probably with slightly slower shifting).

Incorrect...an 8 speed and 9 speed cassette are the same width. The shifter decides how many shifts the derailleur makes.

    Thanks.

I stripped the cheapo brake/shifter combo stuff and put them in the trash. I'm on the fence about doing a 1x9 on this bike or an SS. If the derailluer would not have worked I would have went SS for sure.
