What the hell happened to my bottom bracket?

Ok so I was tightening my BBmount chainguide in the cup and noticed it felt kind of gritty from some dirt, so I decided to take it out completely and clean it.

It's turning and backs out all the way then just starts spinning round and round... I thought this is odd, so I switched sides and backed out the non drive side cup and it came right off. Then the drive side cup came off with the rest of the BB and it looks broken, but I can't tell.

There's a gold colored thing in the middle that moves around in there freely, and the drive side cup is stuck to the bb about halfway on. Also the last 2 threads on the drive side bb cup are worn off completely. I don't know what I did, and I dont know how to procede.

    help?

It would help to know which make and model of bottom bracket you have. Some pictures would be even more useful...

Sounds like the threads on the drive side bearing cup have stripped off, or were cross threaded, likely clogging up the threads in the BB shell. You'll likely need to take it to a bike shop that has a Park BB thread tool, that's a bigger job than just chasing the threads, they'll have to cut the threads through the spalled bearing cup material.

I went to the shop and the guy told me to just put it back in...Apparently the cups just slide on and they just happened to come off unevenly when I removed it. It works now..magically
