I used an old Acera 7 Speed RD on my 2010 Epic Expert when I broke the v weak carbon cage XTR one and waited for a replacement XT RD to show up, shifted OK with the 9 speed and didn't break over 6 days and about 250Km of Trail riding - definitely not as flimsy as the XTR RD....haha.....
The Acera cranks were crappy though - came stock on my hybrid / commuter and the chainrings and crank arms used to flex badly with even moderate power. Got rid of them v quickly
I don't think they make the 7 speed Acera any more I think it has been replaced by the Alivio 8 speed.

Looks like trek agree with OP...lol
Specialized are as bad; just bought my 9 year old a 24" Hotrocks at least the shifters and RD were X3 (which she had on her 20" GF precaliber that was heavily used over 4 years and never a problem) but the FD was some Suntour thing that needed constant adjustment and caused the chain to come off at least twice a day. Took it back three or four times as under warranty still garbage, according to the Spesh dealer they have loads of complaints bout this. Ended up spending $15 on an X3 FD installing it myself and its been fine ever since - the bike was about $500, but don't mind paying for quality as my kids use their bikes a lot and do simple trails - pi**ed me off; it must be a few cents that spesh save on the Suntour crap over the X3
