What is different about the BB and cranks for use with a chaincase

I am referring specifically to the Shimano FC-M540-K crankset and the BB-ES51-K bottom bracket. I want to use the crankset on a bike without a chaincase, and I wanted to know if there is anything wrong or imperfect about doing that.

I'd appreciate anything you can tell me, but here are some specific questions:

1.) What is different between this and a plain crankset and BB?
    2.) Will the FC-M540-K crankset work with a plain BB-ES51 (regular, non-K)?
3.) WIll it look ugly if not hidden inside a chaincase?

Now, come on, boys! Where's your spirit?

You're not gonna let a noob like me stump you on my second question, are you?

    It's simple enough:

What is the difference between a plain Shimano BB (and crankset), and one intended for use with a chaincase (-K models)? And what will be different/wrong/ugly if I use it without a chaincase?

If I have to, I'll buy the thing - half because it might work for me, and half to satisfy my curiosity.
