What is the difference between HG and IG ?

I know that HG is Hyperglide and IG is Interglide but could you use an IG cassette with an HG chain without too many problems ? If it is, would I be better off using an SRAM chain with an IG cassette ? Or would I just have to track down an IG chain ?

This is not going on a race bike, just a regular rider...

No, you shouldn't use an HG chain on an IG cassette (however, you can use an IG chain on an HG cassette). The HG chain is wider than the IG and won't work properly with the IG cassette. If you can't track down an IG chain, then an SRAM chain will work just fine, as it is the same width as an IG chain (I would use the SRAM chain anyway, because I like the powerlink).
