Using old XTR derailleur with new 9 or 10 speed?

The derailleur in the photo is from around 1994. It's currently being used in a 3x8 drivetrain with an 11-28 cassette and 20/32/42 crankset, using early-90's Grip Shift.

If I want to upgrade to a 2x9 or 2x10, which of the following is this derailleur compatible with?
    - SRAM 10-speed triggers (e.g. X9)
    - Shimano 10-speed triggers (e.g. XT)
    - 9-speed SRAM X9 twist shifters

Also, it appears to be a fairly short cage. How much range does it have?
Can it support a 11-36 cassette and 24/36 double?

None of above will work. SEC has made a 10s gripshift to work with old 2:1 shimanos.

The SRAM Attack grip shifters work with Shimano 2:1, right? So I could go with SRAM Attack shifters, a new cassette, and new chain for a 2x9 setup, right?

    I think so yes.
