    Upgrading Derailleur; need advice.

    Upgrading Derailleur; need advice.

Hi guys, I currently have a Jamis Trail X3. I'm looking, in a month or two, to upgrade the rear Derailleur. I currently have a Shimano Deore rear Derailleur.
I ride mainly on the streets however I will it hit the trails.

Any advice as to what I should upgrade to?

Any particular reason to upgrade?...I ask because looking at the specifications on that bike, your not going to see any significant increase in performance by upgrading the rear derailleur.

if the current DR isn't broke but just isn't shifting well, try new cables instead. if you are dead set on a new RD, you'll need to keep it ti Shimano. Sram will not work. That being said, SLX, old stock LX or, the highest I'd go, XT. Just look for a good deal on one.

Save your money. Replace the derailleur only if it breaks or wears out.

I'm with the others here. You will see no real benefit in upgrading the RD, unless it is broken or just worn out (which takes a LONG time to happen). If you really need to upgrade something, the shifters will make a bigger difference, but if you are having any problems shifting now, you likely just need an adjustment and/or new cables and housing.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll wait when(hopefully never) it brakes.
