Upgrade from X9 to X9

What?? Can't be an upgrade man, its more like a repair. Yes, its true, this expensive stuff does wear out. So what has hindered me since I built up my "do all mountain" bike, a Mojo HD with a 2x drivetrain was that it was near impossible to get a chain-guard installed effectively. Read the long ongoing thread in the Ibis zone if you was bored.
So finally, Sram has come out with a 24-38 (replacing my 26-39) with a bashguard. Nice for the AM riding scene. The only thing I wish was that the bashguard was slightly taller and thicker on the cusp to further deflect rocks kicked up by the wheels. This stuff isn't cheap. $130. As you can see from the photos, the old set was pretty chingered up. Drivetrain lasted a year, and this is with chaincare just about taking place after every ride. I use the T9 chain lube and found that wiping it off the chain a couple of minutes of sitting is best. On their directions, they say let it sit for a couple hours. I found this to leave too much wax buildup and in that wax was grit. I live in the dusty and rocky nirvana called gun toting Arizona.
My plan for this year is to purchase a ultrasonic cleaner, and a park tool, quick link remover. Physically get that chain cleaner than a wipeoff and relube. My LBS has a digital chain measure device, so I can now get the most mileage from the chain. This gear is crazy expensive for me and I have to be a little more smart about drivetrain care. Thought I'd pass this on.

I wouldn't think rocks getting kicked up would cause that much wear and tear on your chain rings, unless you were just hauling a$$ and the rocks were quite large. Your rings look like the wear and tear is just coming from regular use...friction with the chain. That excess grit is hell on a drivetrain. No matter how much you clean your gear, it always seems to be caked back on the second you hit the trail. Have you tried any of the "dry" teflon lubricants like Finish Line offers? They do actually dry after application, leaving only a film behind to prevent corrosion. I've found them to work best in dry, dusty climates.

Yes, all changed. Cassette, rear derailer (near broke), chain, cable. Now everything works so dreamy!

It's amazing what some new drivetrain parts will do for an old bike.
