Upgrade to New XT - M786?
I currently have a SLX M663 rear derailleur and I've been hearing a lot of the newer Shimano 'clutch' derailleurs. O was looking at upgrading to the M786. Anyone currently running this model? Is it worth the upgrade over my current SLX?
Yep, do it. I went from a M780, to the M786. Shifts a little better but not much. Since I had the XT Shadow SGS the new XT Shadow plus SGS shifts very similar. I have the M780 shifters too, (XT) so if you have lower level shifters I am not sure how crisp this new DR will be. However, the clutch function is amazing. It is like riding a SS, no chain slap or noise from the drive chain at all, you only hear your tires growling.

I was skeptical about the clutch system when I built up my new bike but because I was using all new components, I decided to go with the latest version XT for everything.
I'm glad I did. The clutch system is pretty amazing. I've only had 3 rides on my new bike but I have yet to hear the chain. It just doesn't move up and down but it shifts perfectly. If your bike has carbon chainstays, this is an even better reason to get the clutch system.
The 29er experiment proved that 26" wheels were just fine and that 650b wheels are completely unnecessary.
