    top swing or bottom swing ?

    hey guys, this prob belongs in the beginner's corner, i just acquired a K2 brass monkey 2002 model and need a front derailleur, was looking at a shimano xtr or xt, i know its a top pull... 31.8 i believe, but what swing type do i need? confused, just want to be sure i get the right part...thanks!

    You need a top pull
    The swing can be of either type
    Personally, I think the top swing looks cleaner

    *edit - you may want to get a top swing anyways to avoid possible interferrence between the clamp and a bottle cage on the seattube should you have one there. (or want to later)

    btw, there is no bottle cage on the seat post tube...

    I guess they took the mounts away for 2002?

    yes and no

    I like top swing better too,as Highdelll says looks cleaner and I think it shifts better too... BUT recently switched to a narrower chainline crankset and the derailleur wasn´t dropping the chain to the small cog as good as before. Yes, I checked the barrel adjust and nothing improved. With a down swing derailleur I wouldn´t have had this problem becouse the cage has not the movement inwards limited by the clamp as a top swing does.Finally had to "shape" the outer cage a bit...
    Just a point to consider.

    yea, i thank you guys for your advice, i just got a Shimano LX M580 9 speed front derailleur , i just need something that works, and works well. ...not making a race bike, just a street cruiser, thanks again for all your help!
